Post Won't stop trying to start!
Actually got a few minutes to work with the new bronco.

I'll preface with I know next to nothing about electrical banghead !

Currently if I hook up the battery it will try to start. It needed a new ignition and key, so went ahead and replaced that. Didn't help with the problem. I am assuming that it is a fairly easy fix, but no more time tonight. It is a 66 with a 302 installed, but the wiring looks good coming out of the firewall. I didn't see any funny things under the dash, so thought I would see if anyone had any thoughts!

Here are some pics of the mess around the voltage regulator!

As always thanks for the help and hope all are having a great weekend!

Matt

to many cables on relay tha one of them no suppose to be there. look like u need to clean up all those wires n trace them down. left i believe goes to starter right goes to battary also kind of depends on what alt your running...

Post Re: Won't stop trying to start!
dang it has been so long since ive looked at a solenoid. lmao
anyway you need your ignition lead from your ignition switch going to the terminal "s" and then the other wire is from your ignition system. You can actually disconnect that to eliminate the confusion to fix your starter problem. disconnect both of them and check for power from your ignition lead. It should only be positive 12V when the key is in the start position. if the starter is going with these wires off of their terminals then your solenoid is bad. thankfully they are readily available and affordable. I always replace it when I put a new starter in. If the starter does not turn over when these terminals are disconnected and you do not have 12V at your ignition switch lead, then connect that lead only. I am not sure if I am making any sense to you or not. There is A LOT of information to give but I am not the best at putting it on a screen. the wiring diagram for this circuit is also a very simple schematic to help you understand how it works. If it was working before just fine and then it started this problem, then you definitely need a solenoid. If you grabbed them thar wirez and moved them all around and hooked em back up. you may have gotten dem all crossed up. banghead

You have the brown wire and the red-blue wire swapped. Fix that then go through and cleanup some of the extra wiring.

Thanks for all the help guys....

Hopefully I'll get some time in the next few days to give it another try.

More to come...I'm sure :)!

Awesome...great info!

Zilla...may have to take you up on that one of these days. Thank you so much for the offer. If I can get it going, I can throw it on the trailer and come down for a couple of hours to wrap up that ugly section (don't want to inconvience you if I don't have too). I have no intentions of leaving the wires that way icon biggin ! As for the rest of the wiring, you guys are absolutely right on cleaning it up. I think he had a bunch of accessories that are no longer there, so those are easy. The rest of the harness and under dash stuff looks unmolested, but I don't have too much faith.

Goldenboy....sounds like my kind of connector! Would love some more info on them. Sounds like I could use them elsewhere.

My thoughts were to get it running (as it did once when I got it), and then I can go through everything and straighten it up. Feel free to shoot me some ideas for a plan on this one..

It is going to be a budget build as it seems to be pretty good....and the wife let me buy it shrug !

Thanks again for all the help fellas and have a great week!

This place rocks fire fire!

Matt

Hey BFD,

Didn't realize you were so close. Thanks for the offer. Might have to take you up on that if you don't mind. Would also save Zilla the drive up. If all goes well at work, we might be able to tackle it. I don't think it will take much. I'll keep you posted as the week goes on. Saturday or Sunday better for you? If we can make it happen, all are welcome (calling Gregg, Zilla, others :))!

With that being said, I work in Windsor, so we might have to get the local guys together for a brew, burger, or cruise in the country one of these days!

Thanks so much for the help...

If I can get this thing starting properly....it's on for making it a driver soon!

Matt

Post Re: Won't stop trying to start!
Got a few minutes tonight to play....

Good news and bad!

Put a new starter solenoid in and no longer have a constant starter. Switched the top connections (thanks Viperwolf). Now I have no start/turnover/click with the ignition switch. As mentioned, I did replace the ignition and key. Here's where I get stumped. I can turn the key to the on position and I get power to some of the functional gauges/things such as alt gauge, fuel gauge, lights, and wipers work as expected. As for the wire mess...one of the wires is to the electric fuel pump....hard wired to a switch which really needs to be fixed, but does work.

Put a meter on the S cable, but didn't get the 12v....again....I am not to bright with the electrical banghead . Thanks 69...you definitely got me headed in the right direction!

Any thoughts?

As for this weekend...BFD/Zillacon...have a few spare moments to help the "not so smart" banghead (not sure I like this emoticon anymore)! Would definitely compensate you with food/drink/gas money/whatever!

Got the power back...so am like a kid at x-mas wanting it to go. After that...I can work on the things I know how to do (darn electrical) icon biggin !

Thanks for all the help.....

Matt

Jump the solenoid to see if it will crank that way. My guess is the start wire is broken somewhere and not sending the 12v start signal. If you take a screw driver and touch the battery side(left of solenoid) to the left small post on the solenoid it should crank. That way you are bypassing the ignition switch completely. Since you have gauges and everything seems to be working with the key in the on position the ignition switch is "probably" ok. May have a burned contact at the crank terminal though.

What year and does it have an auto trans? Auto has NSS in line with the "S" wire. Manual trans after '72 has a jumper wire.

Hey Viperwolf....

66 body and title, but 302, d44, and 3 spd manual....

I'm a bit perplexed...had it running. When I got it...it started, ran, but key would not turn it off (.kind of scary to be honest) with the old ignition and key cylinder.

Pretty sure it can't be to difficult, have limited time, and very little knowledge on the electrical side, so a bit frustratring!

Thanks for the help,

Matt

Check for voltage on red-blue wire at ignition switch (ign in START). If it's good there, it's bad somewhere along that wire. Probably at the troublesome firewall connectors (early models). That should be the only connector in that wire.

Thanks Viperwolf....I trace that wire and see what I have.

Zoso...it seems to feel right at home in mine right now...so much it doesn't want to leave :)!

Lobo-
I'm up for a little bronco drive up to FC. Get something going on Sat/Sun and let me know. I could use a little electrical education.

Zilla....I like the ideas....

I had originally thought Tina...I think the Christine/Tina theme is great!

Tina and Lucy....my two broncos :)!

I'm totally down to have people up Saturday if that would work for BFD/Zilla/Gregg/Anyone that can help me figure out these stupid wires!

Any thoughts fellas...

Could throw some burgers on the grill and feed people if they are interested!

Got her running today! Turns out it was bad grounding to the starter solenoid. Just when I think I know something I don't banghead !

Thanks for all the help. Crawler...the old trick of bypassing the ignition was great and lead me down the right direction. It is nice to have the other working bronco to trouble shoot things with.

On that note....2 bad, straight out of the box starter solenoids..... rant !

Evening BFD...

No worries... Got it started and drove it 10 feet in and out of the garage. Did compression check on the motor (seems to be good ~70 psi on all cylinders cold) and then decided I'm going to pull the motor, trans, and d-case so I can get everything painted. Of course this was after I tore into the motor and decided it would be a lot easier on a stand if I'm going there. If you get some time in the next few months, love to have you up for some "Tina" (bronco's new name) love! Will still need to get the wiring straight and figured out correctly....

Hope you got everything done and the weekend wasn't at work!

Matt
