Post Broken 9"....What to do?
Been a while since I got some time back on the bronco. Pulled the 3rd this weekend and found the problem. Looks like I did a nice job on breaking (what I believe...with the help of Viperwolf) would be the limited slip.

As this is out of my experience...what is the next step to get a bronco back on the road. Here are the options that I could think of:

1.) try to find a 3:50 3rd somewhere

2.) Rebuild this one. Gears actually look darn near new, but have no idea how to do this.

3.) Option 2 with the locker.

With that being said...any ideas? Any leads on where to get a cheap 3rd to get it on the road or shops to get it all put together with gears and a locker? Of course...next question if I go this route...which locker on a budget?

Here are some pics of what I believe is the problem banghead ! Crack all the around. Had about 4 quarts or so of oil and no water (quite surprised really).

As always...thanks and someday I'll get to join on these great runs!

Matt

Dan...you are the man fire fire !

I'm really thinking locker or new limited slip. Any thoughts on lockers? Gears look really good. I have some quick research to do. If you can help set the 3rd up...I will be forever indebted! I would really like to make some of the events this summer. We are crazy through July, but want to hit all the rides (if I get a running bronco) after that! Yup...Killing me seeing all the pics of events and where Kinder and I were in the fall!

I'll keep you posted!

Matt

Definitely be down to learn....If you are up for it! Had a friend help me push out Tina and help me pull the axles and 3rd. His response..."so are we just going to do this.....yup)! Got to learn some how! You shall be reimbursed!

I'll start looking at parts.

Thank you so much!

Matt

Thats an odd place to break, I normally see busted gears. I wonder what made this happen?

If you can afford it, get a selectable locker. If not, I'd recommend a Detroit full locker. I would shy away from another Limited slip unless you DD your bronco. Might look into the Truetrac if you need another LS.

And, the 9" is the perfect axle to learn gears on. It's the easiest to do, but the concept is the same on all.

Thanks for the replies fellas!

Viper...I would definitely be up for that cover if you are willing to part. Let me know what you want for it.

J.D. I agree on the selectable and Detroit. Bronco funds are a bit short at this time and really want to drive this thing this summer. Typically it is more of a daily driver scenario, so the quick fix might work for me.

With that being said, I would assume that I still have to take everything apart to get the new cover on???

Zilla once I hear from Viper and can get the cover, I'll pm you and see if we can figure a date to get this thing installed!

Again....thanks so much everyone!

No problem, you can have everything thats left of it. It costs almost as much for new spider gears as it does for the complete track-lok. I'll never use it again.

You may not even need a setup kit. If the pinion is fine it won't need to be removed. We can just take the diff off, swap some parts, reinstall and setup the backlash. I think I have a set of barely used clutches for it too.

I can bring this stuff up to Dan's whenever.

Awesome....

I think I should probably replace the pinion seal as well. I believe it has been leaking for a little while, and since I have it out....might as well!

I will get with Dan and see what works for the both of you!

Again....Thanks smokin !

Matt - can't blame you for fixing what's there because it's the most cost effective and easy. But there's food for thought whenever you do decide to get a good locker.

Can't thank Dan enough. You Da Man beer !

Big thanks to Viperwolf as well! You guys sure taught me a lot!

With that being said....drove it all over today and it is now officially a bronco summer! My gravel driveway is not going to like the new locker icon biggin !
