Re: new here and have qustion
No its red and has a top. It turns fine, it will only go 4l and N. J shift, bought it this way and have not attempted anything yet, drive shafts are off . the guy i bought it from really did a number and took a bunch of stuff apart. so I dont know the actual symptons yet I just know what he said and that was that the transfer case was shot. motor is strong everything so far seems good he just took it apart before i had a chance to really look at it.

Re: new here and have qustion
J shift transfer cases are notorious for poor shifting, I wouldn't rule out a worn shifter versus the transfer case. But the 72 should have come stock w/a T shift case so something has changed since it was new. Once you get into it further pull the boot off and take a look at how the shifter attaches to the case, see if something is loose, then take the next step as needed.

Re: new here and have qustion
A very common problem when the tcase/trans is taken out and rebuilt by a novice. The tcase input gear can be put on backwards and it will cause those exact symptoms. Take the bottom cover off the tcase and snap a pic of the input gear (first gear after the trans) with the tcase in neutral and I can tell you if that's what it is. Easy to fix.

Nice job - looks like you will back on the road in no time. Do we get to see pics of the Bronco?

Re: new here and have qustion
well put in a new transfer case, now it looks like the rear shaft snapped right at the yoke, and I put in a twin stick, I appear to have to clutch.... I can not get it into gear at all, any suggestions on either problem????? Thanks.

Re: new here and have qustion
The complete rear ouput assembly from the old tcase will exchange with the new one. You only need to remove the rear driveshaft to swap it. If you're careful you won't even drop the 13 roller bearings at the front of the output shaft. If the shaft is broke I wouldn't be surprized if it doesn't go into gear.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the rear output shaft. Driveshaft is an easy fix.

Re: new here and have qustion
when i pulled the transfer case it stayed in place, I packed the pins on the inside on the transfer case and put it back, if it moved around when installing would that throw off my clutch?

Re: new here and have qustion
Ok ..... I got the TC in the right way..... i did the damage to the drive shaft, no clutch and I guess I had it in gear with my foot on the brake.... could I get some help with the shift pattern for 3 on the floor ???? Thanks. I know that sounds stupid but I cant figure it out. Now on to the next one, I am pulling the tranny tomorrow, and taking the shaft in the repairs, Is it common for these to have clutch problems or could it just be the linkage? and what oil should be in this Tranny.....

Re: new here and have qustion
Usually 90 wt gear oil for a regular 3 spd, there is also some variable wt oil out that ranges 75-90 wt that will probably make it easier shifting in the cold.

Re: new here and have qustion
I might have a line on a cheap 3spd and t-case if you're interested. Should be a T-shift (which have a 2-low if you can find it). My father-in-law pulled his out of his bronco in favor of a NP435 and a NP205.
