I grabbed my dizzy to look at taking it apart & remote locating the TFI. That ended pretty quickly, I'll go check with a mechanic on Monday to get the special f'n tool.
I realized I pulled the dizzy based on putting it into the Explorer motor, not mine. I'm 99% sure the gear is wrong. I pulled it from a 5.0 1990 Lincoln Town car. The gear looks machined and I think that means its steel. I need a cast iron gear for my flat tappet camshaft.
Sooooooooo.................... After doing enough reading to develop a good case of automotive hypochondria, I don't know what to do. Do I replace the gear on 21 year old Lincoln dizzy? Buy new manufacture? or reman? dizzy from local Carquest? I guess if its "new" then everything is new, not "20 years old, but tested out ok". I'm not a fan of putting a bunch of time, money & effort into a part that is older than most the kids at Western State. I'm also not a fan of buying Chinese junk that isn't going to hold up.
Dan does your extra dizzy have the cast gear or steel gear? The cast gear dizzy would have come from a non-HO, non-rollered motor. Do you have an Explorer throttle cable? I think we had a conversation about that in Tin Cup.

I pulled the EFI stuff off the motor today. Everything went well. So easy working on an engine stand. Motor looked good, still coming to grasp with possibly selling it. Zilla's new tool got me wondering, so I borrowed a video scope from a mechanic & looked in the cylinders & there is still cross hatching visible.
I got the whole wire harness disconnected, only breaking one tab off one injector plug. Since the harness comes with the Mustang plugs, and these seem to be in ok shape, can I plan on taking these out of the loom & using them?
What vac lines will I be using? I run hydroboost, so don't need vac for brakes. PCV & pressure reg are the only thing I can think of. Cap the rest?
Is BCB's wire harnesses the exact same as RJMs? I want to make sure I get the plug in for the Baumanator & OBA. If it comes unloomed, it looks like you don't get that stuff. I'll sent an email to RJM asking about that.
Viper, I saw you recommended Fel Pro intake gaskets without the hole for the EGR gases, but can't find my link, can you give me those numbers again?
Are the Explorer valve cover gaskets reusable?
Is there a way to wire a regular dizzy for remote TFI, and use a remote TFI like the Lightning one? In the CB.com thread above, someone mentions that the dizzy for remote mount TFI was too big & didn't fit, I don't want to risk that. I think I can seal up the bottom of the regular dizzy, but I don't like the look of the exposed wires on the TFI module after it is remote mounted, in the rangerstation.com thread. I want the best of both worlds, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out.

The HO motors used low tension oil rings so cylinder wear doesn't seem to be much of a problem with them.
Did you compare all the connectors to the pics at RJM? Which are different?
PCV and fuel reg need vac. That should be it unless you want to use some smog equipment. It's nice to have one port available for troubleshooting though.
Felpro 1250S3 is the gaskets you want. Don't get 1250.
One of those links above shows the standard TFI distributor converted to remote. Just need 3 wires and terminals and move the TFI plug to the remote location.

And another way of remounting the ECT than drilling & taping like Tito? I wanted to use the factory remote TFI because I don't like the look of the open connectors on the remote mounted TFI in the thread. Here is what I've got: Injectors: old style IAB: new style ECT: new style ACT: I have one of each. I got the Explorer ACT (new) & air inlet tube, also got the ACT (old) from a Taurus SHO w/the MAF- weird, the SHO ACT is in the air filter box, before the MAF. MAF- 89-95 style

Rox where did you find them for $37.00, Summit Racing is $45.00.
Well I was going to try to see if a dizzy for a remote TFI would fit, but I've done all the searching I can, on Rockauto & Napa and cannot find one with a cast iron gear. So I'm going to use the standard dizzy and remote mount the TFI.
I have 3 options for new dizzys. I can get a rebuilt one from Carquest for 65.00 + 40.00 core. I can get the new one from Rockauto for $75 + no core, so I'd still have the steel gear dizzy. Carquest is looking into other options. I'm leaning towards the new one, both are Cardone brand. Napa lists their rebuilt dizzy for $91.00 + 44.00 core. I don't get good deals there, so is there any reason to spend more for a Napa (unknown brand, but very close to the Cardone part number).

Viper did the Autozone heater hoses work out? I was thinking about cutting & flaring my Explorer heater lines, they are pointing up. Is the small bypass line important to keep coolant circulating or can I loose it? I don't see one on your Mustang set up pics, but I maybe missing something.
Dan, Rox how did you route your heater hoses, or plan to? Looks like maybe a big loop of heater hose may work, but I've got a lot going on, with a set of T's that feed an aux heater, and my OBA filters are there too.

Actually it looks like they may still fit. I'm going to check at Carquest tomorrow and see if they can crossref the Autozone #, if not could you pick up 2 extras & I'll pick them up with all my other stuff.

Both of these look right according to the description & application guide. Is there a difference between the one for the automatic and the manual. The one listed for the manual has a bluish looking gear. I can't cross ref the numbers anywhere. I assume the "Interchange Part Number" is some secret junk yard cross ref. I think I'll pull the trigger on one of these tomorrow. Somehow, I always manage to screw these things up.
Will someone have a look and tell me what you think. The dizzy listed as a "manual" truck model has a much thicker shaft between the dizzy & the gear. The one for the auto (the one Rox posted) has the same shaft as the Lincoln one I have.

One thing you can do is just get the new dizzy you want and press on the cast gear you need. I had to do that when I converted my 460 to a roller cam. The steel gear for me was 90$ and I chipped the first one. Suck'd so bad to see $90 just sit there broken. It's not too hard to do with basic tools you should have.

If I knew the dizzy for the remote TFI fit, I would have bought it, and swapped to a cast gear. Hopefully I chose right. I think I'm fine. Last night, I THOUGHT the dizzy had a different shaft than the one I need, but I had looked at too many pics of dizzys in one night & it was up past my bed time. I ran out to the garage & looked at the one I had, and it actually looks just like the one I bought (the one for a "manual"). I think the differences are minor/cosmetic/different revisions. If I get a steel gear, I'll buy a new cast gear & swap them. I'll probably quickly test fit it into my Explorer motor & maybe even my motor, so I can return it, if it is wrong, but I don't think it is. Chad

Ford used 2 different size shafts. I don't know why. Could be related to oil pump driveshaft size difference between 302 and 351w.

That is a great chart to see. Blue = cast iron = awesome!
What concerned me was the diameter of the shaft above the gear. I wish I could claim I saw the .064" difference in gear diameter in the pics. But now that I know what to look for, I'm sure I'll spot a 0.467" gear shaft from a mile away. LOL.
Thanks a bunch for the help. Its real nice to have people who have actually done this stuff & give advice. I certainly don't know anyone in Gunnison that has done this, let alone anyone who would put up with my incessant questions & comments.
I'm becoming FMCEFIOCD. I have started looking up stuff that doesn't have anything to do with my build, just cause I want to know. My head has been spinning for the last few days, I find my mind wandering from tasks at hand to thoughts of remote mount TFI dizzys with cast iron gears, and the vehicles they may have come from........ When I drive around I see crappy old Mercury Cougars w/ V8 emblems and hit the brakes, I can't pass an Explorer or Mountaineer without looking at the fender for the V8 badge. I have an ever evolving list of "needs" running around in my head, and on 2 or 3 different pieces of paper, in my house & shop. Thanks again, I need the support of people who have been there, the first step is admitting I have a problem, I know.

I was browsing the other items available from the guy selling the dizzys. I think I know the answer, but anyways, how difficult would it be to adjust an OEM Speed Density engine/ecu harness to fit a Mass air. Also the harness uses a remote tfi type dizzy & wiring. That is a bad idea, there is a big difference in how the injectors & tfi are wired, far beyond my ability. Not going to try to reinvent the wheel.

So I finally clicked the right link & found the list of connectors that come in the kit. Pretty much what I figured. I only need to swap 3 connectors to make the harness fit, no big deal. If I stumble on the older parts I'll use them, but otherwise I'm not going to worry about it. Since I didn't get a throttle cable at the yard I need a cable. Any thoughts. I need to study the BCB cable kit & see if it can be built. I was reading on the throttle problems with Explorer EFI and think I'm going to try this: http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showpo ... tcount=116I don't have a Mustang throttle body so I have to rig something else up. I even found one crazy set up using 1/2 a pulley. Still haven't figured that one out from the pics, should have taken a close look at Chinamen's. And, I've got a cool surprise coming. It maybe a little while, but a friend is making me something cool. It will defiantly get posted when it arrives. Chad

Don't knock the half pulley. It works great. I've done that to a completely stock explorer TB using the entire pulley too.

Ha, just kidding, I'm sure its slick. I just can't figure out whats going on from the pics I saw at CB.com.
Thanks Dan. I'm thinking of using the BC kit. Good to know it only takes a little work with the pedal to get it right. I've got a torch, no problem.

Vipers pulley system looks slick. I want to see it in action someday. I just extended the arm on my TB and it works fine too. I also have the pivot on my pedal adjusted. Mine was like a light switch, either all off or all on, which is the opposite you want while wheeling. Now I can feather the throttle.
