Dumb question time - Axles and splindles
When I added a lunchbox locker to my D44 a few months ago, I noticed that I had mismatched spindles.
One had a deeper ring than the other, and the axles each had shoulders that fit into the ring, but one was longer to fit the deeper ring. There was also something like a large dust plate that sort of sealed the whole spindle off. When I put the whole thing back together I tried to put the long axle with the short spindle and it wouldn't work. I had to match the spindle to the axle.
Most of the axles I see in the junk yard have neither shoulder nor dust plate on them.
Many of the axles that Chaser has for sale don't have them, and neither to the photos of the axles for sale on most Bronco parts houses.
What's the story with the shoulder and plate and should I care?
And the biggest question, If I do the chevy or ford disc conversion, will my mismatched axles cause me any problems?
Should I buy a different axle?
