Emissions today
So I went to get emissions done today because I have to do it every year since som person at the state had to feel important and make the cut off at 1975. I got emissions last year without any issues and I passed with flying colors. This year however, they said I have to have a smog pump. I told them that it's not California and were at high altitude. Now I have to have an appointment with an inspector tomorrow to determine if I will have to have a smog pump on my vehicle for a few hours every year. This is stupid, if the vehicle passes without it, then there is no reason there should be a smog pump on it. I'm gonna blame the guy that lives at 1600 Pennsylvania. It's the big house that is painted white. I just want someone to blame right now. Has anyone had this problem and what was the solution.

Emissions today
Same thing happened to me last year. Missing smog pump failed visual. Picked one up from a member here and ran some tube to a vacuum port and then the exhaust with a check valve. Guy passed me.
I have a 76 non California bronco but after 75 they require a cat and smog pump.
Talked to the guy at length about it. No way around it unless I move out of Denver and into a county without emission requirements.
You can switch engines but you will be required to run a smog pump and cat. Or at least in Denver. They hold you to the year of the vehicle.
Hope this helps. I know it's stupid a few of us in here have been threw it.

Re: Emissions today
When I got the emissions on my Cobra last summer I talked to the inspector about it. He said its only gonna get worse. Said any mods will start to fail the visual. Bunch of d-bags. I fought with them for a while about the cats I had on my car. They were types carb legal high flows. But since they weren't factory oem I failed the visual.

Re: Emissions today
I just got the run around today from the inspector. These ass hats are morons. It passed emissions today on their machine but he said I have to have an air pump for cold starts. Maybe I'll make one out od cardboard and tell them that it has the same affect. I really am worried for mankind sometimes and can't inamgine that they were the fastest swimmer. to air emissions. I guess I will pull the engine now and get everything done

Re: Emissions today
It's not those asshats that's the problem, it's the elected morons that think we need to be another Kalifornia.

Emissions today
You can grab the air pump and the brackets you need put of the pick n pull. There were a bunch up there for grabs. Shouldn't cost too much and you shouldn't have to pull the engine.
If you need some help I would be more than happy to help you out next week.

Re: Emissions today
I'm looking for a reason to pull the engine and finish everything up in there. Thanks for the pick and pull lead. I'll go take a look this week.

Re: Emissions today
I just had mine done. When they saw the fuel injection, they instantly assumed Mustang engine and asked if I had some form that told the engine year, etc. After I explained I put fuel injection on my original 289, then it was okay.
But, talking to the tech, he said if you put any engine newer than a 1974, you have to have that form and all emission equipment that was originally included with that, including cats!
I'm all for a clean environment, but rules like that are an over-regulation crock!
Does anyone know if they go the work to look for casting numbers and serial numbers? Or is 1994 5.8 going to look to the tech just like a 66 289 with fuel injection added?

Re: Emissions today
You show me an emissions guy that can read Ford casting numbers and I'll show you a guy who will meet you in the parking lot to talk about all the Ford projects he has at home.

Re: Emissions today
some of the independents are a little better.. I went to a guy over on federal and seemed pretty with it.. but you go to the state emission stations.. forget it.. you could have a fish tank in there and they wouldn't know what it was..

Re: Emissions today
My '76 passed back on April 6th. It's running a little rich, but the smog pump and cat are on there. They were very interested in the fact that my glove box door does not have the VIN tag. The tech crawled all over the truck looking for the VIN... I know where it is; I was happy to assist, but he wan't sure he could take my word...
They did not check the gas caps. I noticed this only because the previous time I did emissions, the tech dropped the 30-year-old chrome cap on the concrete and watched it roll down the driveway. She then casually picked it up and handed it to me without any care to the new large dent in the edge and scratches... I'm a little picky about such things, if someone's going to break my toys, it will be me goddammit!
