They should be the same. You'll probably want to figure a double V-belt set up. The higher amperage comes with more drag on the belts. Belt squeal should be expected, especially on start up, even with a double v-belt.

Manufacturers switched to serps when they switched to high amp alternators to deal with the increased power consumption by ECUs and EFI.

Got it. In your case, you'll either want a serpentine front dress from a van, or maybe the van PS pump bracket (they used Saginaw pumps) will work with an explorer dress. Don't know if it will work between the two though.

I see fewer vans here with 5.0s than 5.8s.
Explorers run about 3-4 a month, maybe.

The Explorer serp set up is most desirable because it is short, and fits behind our radiators the easiest. Wild Horses makes a bracket to use the Saginaw pump with the Explorer serp.

Truck serps are a little longer, but it looks like most have made it fit. Trucks used a PS pump that are known to be shitty. You can use a PS bracket from a van (5.0 or 5.8- I think) that fits the Saginaw pump, to the truck serp. You can search this on CB.com and come up with a few threads.

All these serp set ups came from trucks with EFI, so all used electric fuel pumps. The timing chain covers will not accept a mechanical fuel pump. Keep that in mind.

It must be my lucky day. I went to the pull and pay and scored a serp set up. I have to go back for the timing cover and balancer tho, I did not have an impact or a socket big enough.

Be very careful with the timing cover, top two bolt corrode easily and will break off in the heads. Balancer puller is needed, also 3 very long metric bolts, I can't remember their size, maybe 8 or 10?

Thank you Phil, that's very helpful.
I do have one question, has anybody had a balancer rebalaced? Is it cheaper to buy the aftermarket balancer or have one machined ??
If machined than a referral for a shop that will do it in under a week turnaround? Or do it locally at least?
