Post Charcoal canister setup
So I think my fuel pump is dead, don't know for sure but that seems the case. I always seem to have a lot pressure built up after driving it. I can always hear it hissing when I stop. What is a good set up for a charcoal canister? What kind should I use? How would I plumb one in to my setup? I do have a aftermarket fuel tank but I don't have any extra vent lines coming out of it. Can I rig something that goes to the filler neck or should I drill another hole in the tank? Is all this pressure over working my pump possibly causing it to fail?

Any input would be appreciated.

Howdy Bob,

I would say you found your problem.

If your tank isn't vented somehow it over works the pump.

I don't recall your set up but a lot of guys plumb a vent line into the fuel return line.

I think the 77 style vent system is the best / easiest. It is simply a vent line from the tank, an inline roll-over check valve, and the rectangular style canister mounted to the firewall.

Before you pull the pump I would try running it with an alternate 12V power source.

What is your fuel pressure when your vehicle is running? Do you have any obstacles the fuel pump has to overcome in your fuel system?

My tank didn't have any extra barbs. I added a barb to the filler neck. Drilled & tapped for a npt x barb brass connector, then added a little solder. Worked great. I just used a tank vent/check valve, no charcoal cannister, but I don't have emissions or park indoors, so smell isn't a problem. You can smell the gas sometimes on hot days. Especially when you first start it up.

On a charcoal set up, you have a line com the tank to the canister. Now do you need a line to the intake and then another to the return line in case fuel gets in.

What's a good donor vehicle for a charcoal canister?

Any early 90's bronco, f150, ranger, some cars. If you standing at the open hood the canister is low left front near the inner fender battery and engine. At least on bronco and f150's. They are usually black have two mushroom cap breathers and two nipples.
