Spoke with Scott this afternoon at MPG heads. Gonna try to bring things by on Friday morning to have him take a look.

Also spoke to Nascar Mike about his guy. Estimate without looking at it was about 1300 without a new crankshaft.

I guess we will see what Scott says/recommends and go from there.

Keep us posted. He's a good guy sometimes hard to read but he's very knowledgable and up front.

it would be the crating that would make me nervous, hopefully someone knows how to crate something like this.

Post Re: Eck's 351W build thread
Spoke with Scott at MPG this morning (after sitting in the parking lot for an hour waiting for him to show up.) It looks like he is going to be able to re-bore to .040 and hone the block, turn the crank, and upgrade the cam and install a new rebuild kit. Among a few other things, all said in done-- should be walking out of there with a better than original engine for less than 1200.

Kirk-- remember when we (you) spent all day trying to figure out why the engine kept mis-firing? You eventually tracked it down to some obscure fact that the 1984 Lincoln 351W had a different firing order. Well I found out why today. This engine had a 302 camshaft in it so it fired in order of the 302.

Anyways, Scott is real busy so I should get the engine back at the end of August. If I can get it in and tested before September, I am hoping to make a wheeling trip or two before the winter hits!

Yep, he does good work, and Kirk has experience assembling one of his engines. We just stabbed a 5.0 in puffy's rig

Post Re: Eck's 351W build thread
A quick update:

Scott at MPG Heads is fire fire along-- should have the engine rebuilt no later than next week. I am going to be taking him my flywheel and harmonic balancer next Monday as well to get those done.

I had originally planned to try to just get the engine back and installed much to the same as I had it before the mishap. I have changed gears a little bit and am now planning some improvements while the engine is out.

Last weekend, I was able to pick up an Explorer front dress, so I plan to change to serpentine. I was also able to grab the wiring harness and computer for EFI as well as the upper intake. This morning I was a big winner of a lower lightning intake on Ebay so I am well on my way to having the parts needed for the EFI swap. I think it only makes sense to do this while I am already installing the engine. I have a message out to EFI Guy to see what his availability is to get me going-- hopefully sooner than later (unfortunately I am going to be working Saturday so can't make the tech day.)

I am hopeful to have everything collected, in my garage, and ready for install by the end of September. That would still give me a chance to get on the trail once or twice before the weather prohibits much.

Awesome direction.....................have you already selected the cam for the engine ?

some threads on CB.com that review which cam is best for EFI motor.

Thanks-- I'll check with Scott tomorrow to make sure he is putting in a cam that will be computer-friendly. Hope he knows what that is!!

A general rule of thumb is that you want an LSA of 114 or higher, but what it really all comes down to is valve overlap, less is better in this case.

Yours is a non roller block, correct? What heads are you going to be running?

Confirmed with engine builder today. Decided on a slightly larger cam that is EFI/CPU friendly and will add to the power/torque.

Cool project..nice progress! Scott is the man to talk to. He had a lot of good advice as I built the 427. He also has a lot of blocks around.

Post Re: Eck's 351W build thread
Got the engine, crank, pistons and rods, rebuild kit, re-surfaced flywheel all back from the machine shop today. The next step I think is going to be to clean everything up real good but I think maybe I want to wait to do that until I am ready to start assembly so there is no rust possibilities? I also need to paint everything but I was told it is much easier to do once it is assembled? This is my first engine build, so I am definitley looking for suggestions or tips. I have a couple of books and a DVD to watch, but I am sure it will be information overload.

So this is where I am gonna ask for a second set of eyes so I don't miss anything. I want to go through and make sure I have everything I need to re-assemble the engine (gaskets, seals, bearings, etc.) My plan is to have as much as I can cleaned, prepped, and ready for assembly so that I can try to offer up another engine build day and get as much help as people are available for.

Anyone want to come by one evening in the next couple weeks to walk through what I have and what I need with me? Greatly appreciate it in advance. Even better if you have experience with Explorer front dress and EFI with a 351w!

I will be of little to no help in the teaching side of this build but I know Dan and I would love to come be an extra set of hands and learn along side of you if timing works out

We are out of town this Friday through next week unless we are extremely lucky bow hunting but if the layout and build - assembly - install run beyond then, we will do our best to attend. This is the same engine he is putting in his bronco

IMO, paint when assembled...easier to mask certain areas off. Are the cam bearings already installed? I have a buddy with the right tool if not

All the way to heads and oil pain... then you can paint the serp and instakes (lower and upper) separately if you want..put some old spark plugs in and just tape off the lower intake mounting area the front water jackets etc..

pretty pics of my build.. might help you a little.
