I'm switching to alloy wheels from steel and they're thicker. I'm assuming I need longer wheel studs. How much stud needs to be engaged to be safe? Just need to figure out how long a stud I need to buy.

Since most of us use 1/2 inch lug nuts you need about the same for engagement to be safe. Usually if you get at least 8 full turns you are good. Open end or closed won't really matter. Usually the stock studs will be sufficient.

But in a serious note, you don't want them so long that you can catch rocks on them.

I would go with a length that protrudes 5/8" beyond the wheel. Are the new wheels lug-centric? I hope so. Flat lugs needed checked almost daily on alloy's! I ruined a set in high school.

For that matter, I have also damaged my lug-centric beadlocks as well...

The new wheels are lug-centric. Just remembered a second question on the same topic. With my current lug nuts I can't get a socket into the very narrow area that the lugs reside in. Is the usual solution smaller lug nuts or a thin walled socket?
