Got me my first elk!
Got my first elk with a bow this weekend. On public land to boot. Not only did I kill my first elk ever, I did it with a bow and it died 50ft from a road so didn't have to pack it out!

Re: Got me my first elk!
Do you have that kind of good luck all the time ?
If that happened to me, I would go ahead and hang it up knowing it would never happen again !

Re: Got me my first elk!
Nice bull. I remember my first and only elk. 1/4 mile hike uphill to get him to the atv. About had a heart attack after the first quarter I packed out and I think I was 27 years old. Not to young to have a heart attack I felt.

Re: Got me my first elk!
Wow congratulations! Next year I am doing archery season if my shoulder holds out. This year I'm going third season rifle up by Glenwood springs. Ive never harvested and Elk only hiked with guns for lots of days. This year I feel the bronco luck. Hope mine is close to a road too. I'm not getting any younger.

Re: Got me my first elk!
I spent the first 9 days of bow season chasing them and have been after them every Friday evening - Sunday at dark since. Still have not had a chance to release an arrow.
First time bow hunter and now it is in my blood. Love it. I have hunted with a rifle all my adult life, taken a few elk - nothing worthy of posting photos of, and will probably continue to do so.
But there is something special about getting that close... (not that I have been able to yet!!!)
Funny thing is, they have not been rutting yet. Northern part of the state is so wet, we found them down low in t he parks and meadows. Down south - they are at timberline. But thus far - not one single bugle. Strange.

Re: Got me my first elk!
We had a few bugles in the early morning and before dark. Actually had more bugles opening weekend. Didn't see anything Friday, my buddy shot a weird looking 2x4 on Saturday and we called in a spike Sunday morning but then this guy made a huge mistake. We were walking down the mountain around 9am and a bugle came from the timber, very close. We walked in and he was rippin a tree up. Made a few cow calls and I had him a 15yrds but couldn't get a clear shot. He started moving away and my buddy gave him a bugle and the bull got so pissed I seen him grit his teeth and then slam his antlers into the dirt (he was close, like under 20yrs). He turned and started walking back up the hill and for some reason stopped right in the only shooting lane I had. 25yrds. Swack! End of story!

Re: Got me my first elk!
Very nice bull and awesome story! I am hoping that when we return I can get back into hunting with my son. Love hunting birds, but have only hunted big game a few times and harvested nothing. I did get to take one shot with a bow at a deer, but he jumped just as I released the arrow and I missed. Bow hunting is fun and the technology has come a LONG ways since I hunted with my dad's hand-me-down Jennings (or was it browning??).
Were you channeling the Nuge?

Nice trailer! Now all you need is an automatic dog water-er.
