Troubleshooting steps advice: Sputtering / Low Power
Hey there, long time CCB.
So I decided to get the bronco out after a long winter of mostly sitting parked. An issue that's getting worse, every time I go out is some sputtering, and occasional backfiring.
Idle is smooth. Revving at idle is also smooth.
Driving in 1st gear, the sputtering hits right before I'd naturally shift to 2nd.
Driving in 2nd gear, same. No sputtering until I'm right about to shift to 3rd.
3rd gear seems unaffected, but I haven't done any highway driving. Just around town.
What would be the steps you'd try to troubleshoot?
I followed the fuel lines and I'm thinking there's no fuel filter. But maybe I don't know what to look for.
I went to the local shop in Colorado Springs to inquire about getting the plugs replaced and timing set. $270? Um, no thanks.
What would be your course of action?
Thanks, Mark

Basic no money needed checkup sounds about right. If it sat all winter you likely have something stuck in the carb. Is it still running a points dizzy? If so verify the gap & dwell are good. Pull the plugs & inspect them for wear & color. If you have a multi-meter ohm out the spark plug wires. Do you have a vacuum gauge, make sure it's in the 15-20 @ idle.

Mine was doing the same thing... Idle smooth, runs through the gears until you put your foot in it or at the end of the band.
I re-adjusted the points correctly and set the timing. Both were WAY off.
Runs like a top now.
Try that, it's FREE!
