435 gear shifter

Postby cravenbronco » Thu Jan 25, 2018 8:51 pm

Was wondering if anyone was running this of type of shifter in there bronco? How do you like it ? Is it better that the stock ?
I was thinking of fabricating my own. This spring I'm going to be installing my new to me Np435. So I'm looking to see if anyone can give me some measurements on a few things. Such as the mounting bracket that the shifter mounts to. WxLxH. The triangles and the length of the linkage ( just length ) running from one side to the other. Length of the shifter it's self not including the heim joint.
Thanks in advance

I had one... loved it. Seemed to shorten the shifting throw and put the shifter in a comfortable position.

The higher the connection is on the faux shifter, the shorter the throw will be. If the distance between the pivot points and the other connection on both shafts is the same, then it should shift the same as if you were shifting the tranny stock. Fun project!
1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.

Thanks for the info. I will remember that.
I know once I start this I'm going to be opening a big can of worms. Going to also replace the the brace that runs under the floor board, passenger side floor board, passenger and driver side rocker panels, Rock sliders, transmission cross member, tunnel cover, rebuild the trans and transfer case and I'm sure there will be something else. It's a Bronco and hoping to have it mostly done by July.

Alright I've got most of it fabricated up except for the linkage that hooks the shifter to the trans and the height of the shifter mount. Is there anyway someone can take a couple of measurements for me ?

I don't have a gear banger but I do have the np435 installed and could take measurements and hold a level for a picture. Let me know what you need.

And the height from floor to shifter knob.

Sorry for the bad drawing

Thank you I sure appreciate it.

Here's what I got:

Your length (from your drawing) is 19".

Your height is 6" (when level).

Let me know if you need anything else.

Mine is about 11" of the floor but that is because I'm not using a gear banger. It puts it right by my knee today. I think if I was using a gear banger I would probably start with a stick a little taller so that I could cut it down to where I want.

Look forward to seeing your finished project!

Sweet now I should be good. I promise i will post it up once I got it all put together and painted. I've got the original shifter that I'm going to chop down or I might just fabricate a new one. I really don't like chopping original parts if I don't need to.
All I have left to fab is the base mount, shifter, shift linkage and drilling some holes. Was thinking about making the shift linkage bars adjustable. Any thoughts on that ?

I would make it adjustable. That way you can take any slack/slop out of it as needed. That's my thinking at least.

I've gotten a bit further on this project. It still needs a couple of adjustments. Besides that it looks good and seems like it should function. All that I have left is the mounting base and shifter. Hopefully I will get it all cut out and welded up in the next week or so.

All that's left is the base plate.
