P/S pump improvement

Postby Gunnibronco » Sat Mar 17, 2018 3:48 pm

I'm plumbing my P/S, h-boost & 4x4x2 box with AN hose. I'm installing a new pump body into a dual return reservoir. I know I've read there is a way to increase the pump output, but can't find it now.

I've run h-boost for years, but am upgrading to the 4x4x2 box, dual return & a p/s cooler. I'm planning to add hydro assist in the future, but not now.

Very rarely, with my old set up, the power steering would be dead right after start up, so I figure now is a good time to put a new pump in. I recently bought a used/never run WH pump & bracket planning to put it into my 72. But I figured I'd rob the pump from it and put it into my 74.

Ok, so why would the new reservoir only have 1 bolt holding it to the pump? The Tom's pump & WH pump use 2. I figure I need to drill a second hole & use both bolts. Or will it be ok with only 1 bolt?

And the WH pump uses metric hardware to attach the pump to the reservoir & bracket, but the old Tom's uses standard hardware. Just different stock applications?

If I remember right I was going to carefully drill a second hole, I never understood that either because the pump had the threads. Also I believe the later p-pumps were metric vs. the older standard ones.

You can see the spot where it would be drilled. I was wondering if 1 bolt & the outlet fitting was adequate. I'm guessing there was some application with that set up, and it probably worked.

What is a p-pump vs the older pump? Are they higher output? Is it the Delphi pump WH is advertising? I've emailed them to see if they can ID my pump as a Delphi vs Saginaw. I didn't know there were 2 versions.

Mine looks like this one, but the shaft measures .690 at the end (pulley is installed), not .75. I assume the shaft is tapered, and I don't know where it's measured from.

Was going through some notes and this is a link to the pump that can came from, I believe it was actually a 70's Lincoln application.

Thanks. I found a bunch of pics of other pumps that only used 1 bolt & the outlet fitting. I think I'll give it a shot without drilling the extra hole.

P-pump is the pump we are all using. There is also a TC Saginaw pump that was used on some Jeeps.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavist ... ndex2.html

The standard/metric bolt thing changed about 1980. The odd thing is the outlet fitting should have changed to metric with the mounting bolts (1980). But the pump I have from WH has metric bolts, and a 5/8" inverted flare outlet.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/1209cct- ... -steering/

The Pirate article lists a bunch of P-pump specs. Most the pumps are rated at 3.1-3.4gpm, 1200-1450 psi.

I think the WH description of their pump is poorly written, it had me somewhat confused. From what I've been reading, I think WH are selling new (not rebuilt) pumps, probably at the higher end of the output scale. When I first read it, I thought Delphi was different from a Saginaw pump, but I think the names are interchangeable. Not sure how they have metric bolts & a SAE output. I'll look for a part number and see if I can cross reference it.

Thanks, I saved the article.

I did this on my Saginaw, including drilling out the hole. It worked great with the 4x4x2 box and hydroboost, but couldn't always keep up at low speeds after I added the ram. Parking lots where I used the brakes sometimes meant diminished power steering.
