I don't get to the front range often. Salvage yards, swap meets, etc are all things I just read about, with jealousy. Someday maybe my schedule will allow me to hit a big meet, but I'm not holding my breath. I saw a nice one on Ebay last night.

I was wondering the same thing, can I buy 76 plates and register them? Pretty cool if so.

Thanks, from what I understand they can be run as 'show' plates, as long as you have a regular set of registered CO plates and you are attending a show or event. I dont know the exact details. Either way it would be cool to have one, even one hung on the garage wall.

If you run across one I'm happy to reimburse you plus some beer money.

Post Re: Wanted: 1939 Colorado license plates
i did a little poking around...

"With the support of car clubs and enthusiasts, our state legislators passed what’s known as the Colorado Original Plates law, also known as the Year of Manufacture license plate law. For insomniacs out there that want some dry reading, you can find this law on-line by searching for Colorado Revised Statutes 42-3-219(1)(b). Here the highlights of this law in plain English:

Colorado allows owners of vehicles 30 year old and older to register and display Colorado original license plates of the same year as their car. As you might expect, there are limitations:

-they have to be original Colorado plates (no reproductions)

-they have to be legible with no more than 7 characters.

-the embossed (raised) year of the plate must match the year of your classic car (I’ll talk about 'exceptions' to this in a bit.)

-while you only need one vintage plate, you can display two if you have them.

-your car must have a current Colorado registration and plates.

-you must have your issued plates and approving paperwork (DR2818) in the car with you at all times when displaying your vintage plates (more on this below.)

When you display your vintage plates, there are also restrictions on how you can use your car:

-it can only be driven to and from auto club assemblies, conventions, meetings, demonstrations, tours and parades.

In addition (or perhaps contrary) to these restriction stated in law, the Department of Revenue Title and Registration Manual also says you can drive your vehicle with original plates to and from repair facilities and “occasional leisure drives.”

Assuming your vehicle is already registered and plated through your local County Clerk and Recorder, the next step is getting your vintage year of manufacture plates registered with the state Department of Revenue (DOR), Motor Vehicle Division, Registration Section. You can do this through the mail or in person at their office at 1818 Pierce Street, Denver, 80214.

To register your original vintage plates through the mail, you need form DR2818, available on-line (www.colorado.gov/revenue) or through your County Clerk and Recorder. Mail this completed form along with a photocopy of your vintage plate to the above address. There’s no charge and you will get your vintage plate registration in the mail in a couple of weeks."

fire fire

That is awesome info.

I'll only be driving my car occasionally. But with a 360 in a 2200# car, I'm not sure I'll be driving leisurely. I guess that if I plan on speeding, I better put the current plates on it. LOL

I run 72 plates on my Bronco year round. I justify it to myself as always on my way to meet a Bronco club member, I just might not know them yet.

CO DmV rules, as I understand them, require you fill out a form and submit it. You then carry the form and you "real" tags while driving around with your YEar of Manufscture tags on. I keep my paperwork and real tags in a binder in the Bronco, in the event I get stopped. On two occasions I've had PD look at my tags, make mention of them in conversation, but never ask to see the paperwork. Both instances were not traffic or criminal related though.

Thanks for all the info on running the historic plate. I grabbed the one on Ebay, its in great shape so I figured $37 wasn't bad.
