Re: Looking for a mountain bike
I got a heck of a deal at Performance Bicycle a few years ago when I bought my GT. It's not top of the line, but has been flawless for me. It was an $1700 bike, and with two sales going on, I got it for half that. I wish I could remember what the sale was...
Otherwise, if you know what you're looking at, CL would be the best bet.

Pinkbike.com
Unlike CL or other classified sites, everyone there is really in to mountain bikes and will have realistic prices based on actual value.
Also, consider making the trip down to mojo wheels down on Dartmouth. They take bikes on trade and resell them.

Re: Looking for a mountain bike
I am pretty into mountain bikes/biking. I have been working in bike shops for about 15 years, so have some experience both wrenching and selling. If you have any specific questions, or just want some information, I would be glad to help. Are you in Denver or CS?
Let me know.

Re: Looking for a mountain bike
Cannondale makes a good bike, I am sure you will be happy with it. As far as drivetrain and brakes go, SRAM and Avid are pretty much the standard on most bikes now. Shimano is still making great stuff, they are just not spec'd on nearly as many bikes these days...
