Dang. Is the center section messed up?

I missed this, yes, he (they) said the center section was also bent.

I’ve got a tip on another complete axle, I’ll post up if I get my hands on it.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for me, that price is actually good. VA would be tricky, but I do know a guy that hauls equipment from the east coast through Denver.

Black Smoke Donkey

Postby Kinder » Wed Jul 10, 2019 3:32 pm

It had a good run, but the day has come, turbo rebuild time. I’ve always wondered what turbo was on my 4BT, it’s a Holset HX30. Based on what I’ve read from others it’s one of the better turbos for the 4BT, and it’s performed well for me. I’m going to attempt rebuilding it myself, kits aren’t that expensive and the turbo is internally balanced. If I can’t sort it I’ll look for a local shop before sending it out. I think I caught it before any damage was done, fingers crossed.

Do they offer upgraded impellers?

Turbo rebuilds are easy peasy. My first was the stock turbo on my 7.3 bus. Installed a wicked wheel 2 at the same time. Nothing to it.

There isn’t much out there for the HX30, most upgrades are oriented to the HX35 for the 6BTs. The HX30 can push 35 psi if given the fuel. My performance improvements live in the P Pump, I plan on upping my governor spring to 3k and swap in a new #10 fuel plate. That’s about as far as I can go until I swap in heavier valve springs and fire ring / stud the block.

Thanks for the encouragement, I ordered the rebuild kit and watched a couple of vids & downloaded the service manual and spec sheet from Holset. I started the tear down last night. I just need to remove the exhaust housing, it doesn’t want to come off easy, of course it’s seen 1000 degrees hundreds of times, I’ll hit it a little harder tonight.

From what I’ve read the HX30 is one of the best turbo matches for the 4BT, also the head gasket on the 4/6BTs is definitely a weak spot. The future hold pump upgrades for me, gov & fuel plate.

BSD is back on the road, that took way too long. The rebuild kit was only available from one place online, I guess the HX30 isn’t all that common. I’ll break it in easy then hammer it to make sure all is well. Pics tomorrow to prove it runs!

Either way, all I know is I am jealous of you getting out into the mtns! Was home for a few days last week and did some light wheeling with my Dad in his Rubi. It was great to be in paradise!!

Newspaper? How old are you, ha! I’m in the park at the new trail that I’ve been working for forever. Today’s work is a bench install and buck & post/rail fencing.
