The 74

It occured to me that my 74, which i have owned since 1990, does not have its own build thread. Since the 66 has ben in limbo for a year waiting on the vintage inlines aluminum head, the 74 has been my daily driver. We swapped the Chevy disc brakes for ford brakes a couple weeks ago and today Phil and I started doing some measuring of compession and and axle droop so we can install F250 shock towers and the bilstein 7100's that I picked up from Toolman. The current shortlist of items to take care of are:

Shock towers and Bilstein install
Move the rear axle back an inch
New Flares
New Tires
Steering box rebuild
Radiator replacement and minor relocation
Hydroboost rebuild
Power steering cooler
Install leather heated mustang seats

Hopefully, we can knock a few things off the list before super celebration.

I'm curious about the h-boost rebuild. I've read conflicting recommendations about doing it yourself.

Glad I could contribute. Thanks for the cash! icon biggin

I might plan on mounting the F250 shock towers a tad lower than what it will look like. But I'm sure you and Phil will get it figured out how to maximize travel.

That’s the plan, my current setup can’t even utilize all of the travel the shocks have. It can only be compressed about 4 inches before it gets into the bump stops (which I don’t even have yet). Some day when we get around to doing long arms I’ll be able to take advantage of the rest of the travel.

I have never seen the recommendations against rebuilding yourself. I guess I’ll be googling it. All I know is that it appears to seep a tiny bit so I ordered a resealing kit.

I've only seen internet banter. There is always a handful of keyboard warriors who will act like they know "the job is too complicated to do yourself", and recommend buying new. Chances are they don't know what the job involves. The seal kits look manageable and beats the hell out of the price of a new one. I'm curious because I know the day will come when mine needs resealed, so I'm happy someone is actually trying to tackle this project. Keep us filled in on the process, inquiring minds want to know.

This weekend we knocked out the steering box rebuild and plumbed it through the radiators trans cooler to keep it cool. We also plasma cut out a 5/8" spacer to move the steering box out and give some much needed clearance for the upcoming radiator relocatoin. ImageImageImage

So far so good! They have about 30 miles on them so far. Much quieter than the ancient Dunlop Mud Rovers that came off.

Yep, that’s where the 74 camps out while I’m driving the brown truck.
