Looking at purchasing this truck today and need some advice
hey I'm looking at this truck today and what your opinion. I'm not to familiar with Diesel engines. I think I can get him down to 7k for it. Is this a good truck? http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/5051639442.html

Looks clean.
The 7.3 is a very good motor. I wonder why the motor & trans had to be rebuilt already, they should have lasted a lot longer.
The twin torsion beam (TTB) independent front suspension is not great, but isn't a deal breaker, and can be swapped for a solid D60 (if you can afford one) pretty easily.

Asking price is a little high, and same question that Gunni posed. That 7.3 should have gone 250k+. They're good engines. I'm wondering if it's seen serious hauling duty.

So I just got done talking with the guy and he purchased the truck with 60,000 miles and the motor went out on it at 100k. So he put a factory rebuilt engine from jasper in it. He did not tear into the other one to find out what the issue was.

Re: Looking at purchasing this truck today and need some adv
Jasper doesn't have a great reputation for rebuilds. Not like Ford rebuilt at least. My truck is on its second Jasper transmission.
Odds are it wound up with low or no compression in the #8 as a result of running a hot tuner with no gauges. Looking at the truck I would be hard pressed to say it's been worked super hard.
At $10k it's overpriced. Especially with that kind of mileage (even without the rebuild). You have to figure that everything else on the truck has original miles and will need replaced soon. Also, those Jasper builds don't come with turbos, oil coolers, HPOPs, etc installed. So, how many accessories or non-long block parts will be failing soon?
For 10k+ I would shop for a 00-03 7.3. If your budget is >10k, pre-99 trucks are not a bad investment.

Ya I went and drove it and its not worth 10k. It's more in the range of 5k. I think I'm going to pass on it and keep looking. Thanks guys for all the input I will keep you posted.
