Post subject: | Need Ideas for 4X4 trailer |
The planning stages are starting for my trailer build and I am looking for ideas of how far i should take it. I am currently in the process of re-aquiring a trailer I had about 8 years ago. It was about 4x6 had a solid frame and wood deck. I dont remember all the specifics on size and weight rating on axle but do remember that it was a torsion axle trailer. Any thoughts on how a torsion axle would do off road? what kinda weight rating it might be or how I could figure that out? trying to determine what overall size it should be? plan was to run 5x5.5 bolt pattern to match the Bronco but if I have a decent start with this may just run whats on there. Do i go full expedition with it and run a kitchen and propane, rooftop tend etc etc or just build a sealed (as much as realistic) box and store all the camp gear inside? and with regards to the trailer I am getting, work with what I have or just start from scratch, selling this trailer when i get it back and just use that money for materials? the intent of the trailer is to allow me and the fam of 4 to go camping for a night or for an extended weekend with all the gear needed to do that with a family of four. opinions needed |

If you're not planning to go for more than 4-5 days, I would seal it up, build a lid for it to store all your current gear. Maybe make some fold-down counters to set a grill on and prep food etc. Maybe find a mini-truck camper shell to throw on it or something. A way to rig up a nice awning would be cool. You'll want to run some tall skinny tires. Taller will roll over rocks much easier and skinny will keep the weight down. You'll likely have to call the manf. for the axles to get the weight rating. I would imagine their name is on them somewhere. The weight rating maybe as well. Otherwise there is this: http://www.timbren.com/axle-less1.htm The possibilities are endless. It'll be lots of fun! |

Kinder brought his EB trailer with him on the Labor Day wheelin' trip and it was really useful. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=67&p=8757&hilit=siamese#p8757 |

I really like the Ford Truck Bed trailer - heat, mattress, tent, hard top, etc. Only problem it is a little big. Kinders Bronco Tub trailer is awesome - dual tailgates, hard top, etc. So cool how much engineering went into it. Looks great behind his Bronco with matching paint scheme. I think I would do a design based on the M416 Trailer. I found a build from a Denver guy that turned out awesome. I would make some small changes like 3 x 5 instead of 4 x 6, a tailgate for the reasons Jesus stated above, and a spider web or vinyl tonneau cover instead of a hard cover to save on weight. I would do matching wheels and tires including a trailer spare to help with tongue weight. I think the axles can be placed a little further back to help with tongue weight as well to get the perfect balance. I would want fuel can, water can, shovel, and axe. Here is the guy's link: http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/ ... 449&page=5 I think I uploaded these pics, but here they are again . . . |

lots of sweet ideas guys thanks for the info. I am still in the process of trying to repo my old trailer but not moving as fluidly as I hoped. I am not in a rush so I will be patient as it will either save me some time or if nothing else pad the fund a little if I can sell it. I love the idea of the bronco trailer but think I am going to go more generic utility with the design, after looking at some of the crazy awesome camper setups out there I would like to go that way but may start with just the basics adding a bit here and there as time and funds allow. I just hope my fab skills or lack of can produce the vision that is starting to come together in my head. |

That's a pretty cool trailer. Again, high priced, but nice. I find it interesting that you are to unload everything from the trailer to use it as a tent. I think I'd prefer a true RTT so you can still utilize the storage. J.D. |
