Your fitness goals?
Just wondering if we have any other fitness freaks in the club. I got up to around 195lbs about 12 years ago and decided that wasn't for me. I've been working out since.
Recently my wife and I have started working with a fitness competition trainer. I've made more progress in the last 2 months than ever before. 6 meals a day of exacting proportions and a 5 day per week workout schedule can be a challenge but it's so worth it.
Right now plan is to be in the best shape of my life by 40 which is coming up quick in Sept.
Post up what you do, your goals....gym time, runs/competitions you've completed or would like to complete. Or post up what's holding you back!

Re: Your fitness goals?
I got up to almost 260 about 5 years ago and finally said enough is enough. Changed my eating habits and went through a divorce and that dropped me to about 175. I've been yo-yo'ing from 175-195 for the past few years depending on how active I am. During the summer I climb a lot of 14ers, rock climb and do other hiking and backpacking. I've tried having a personal trainer at the gym and I've done 2 rounds of insanity. It finally very recently sunk in that you just can't out-work bad nutrition. I really cleaned up my eating and quickly dropped about 20lbs in the last 2 months and still working it's way down. Signed up for the Evergreen 5k so I've been "training" for that. I've never been a runner so a 5k is a big deal to me!

Re: Your fitness goals?
Even as a young man in my late teens and early 20's back when I was a competitive 3 sport athlete (hockey, football, throwing shot and disk) I have never been "lean". But the last 8 years of sitting at a desk have certainly effected my belt size. I still play hockey and will continue to do so for as long as they have a place for me to play. Add to that the wear and tear on my joints (knees, feet - plantars sux!!!, elbows and shoulders) and I have decided it is time to get healthier.
So this summer I have made an effort to get my fat butt up and to the gym before work at least 3 times a week and once on the weekend (no small effort when that means leaving the house by 3:15am). SO far I have dropped 17lbs (I only weigh myself on Monday mornings), increased my cardio a ton - not yet ready to run a 10k, but I know I could finish a 5k if a big scary guy with a spear was chasing me. My goal is by December I want to go to Vegas and cheer my wife on as she completes yet another 1/2 marathon and maybe not look like such a fat slob on the sidelines.
No - I have no interest in running myself. As I tell everyone who asks, I am just trying to become less of a man. My goals may change as time goes on and fitness levels improve but for now - dropping 60 lbs by Dec 5th is plenty. And doable.

Re: Your fitness goals?
Thanks Eric,
My workouts: A few years ago I read about the body for life program and mentioned to my wife that I might be interested in giving that a shot - she went out and purchased the book for me. I have been following that program for the most part - not religious about it but using it as a guideline. I alternate lower and upper body workouts. Cardio daily. At home we have a treadmill and when I go to the gym I use the "stairway to Jesus" (that folks is bar none the hardest cardio I have ever done). I have even been to Yoga twice. I am sure I look out of place there with all fit ladies in yoga pants but when I look up and get that perfect view of some 20 somethings firm rear end... well that is pretty inspiring all by itself.
Eating habits - I am doing my best to do 2 things. Portion control - something I never learned before and I am doing my best to limit processed foods. I have been doing a lot of reading and learned that many of the nutrients are "processed out" of so much of the food we eat it is absolutely scary.
For years, every summer I have had my little garden growing tomatoes and peppers - this year lots more green leafy veggies - anyone know how broccoli is supposed to grow - I have small bushes but no broccoli yet... Lots of fruits and veggies in my diet now days.
Unfortunately this also means less (not none - just less) barley and hops.... Oh well life is never perfect.
My wife has been a triathlete for years - no longer likes the open water swims so now mostly runs and does fitness classes at the gym. She does 2-3 half marathons a year. She and her friends go somewhere for a race, this year it is back to Vegas for a run down the strip in December.
Yes - it feels great to no longer carry those 17 lbs everywhere I go - to be able to button my jeans without sucking in my gut means a ton to me as well!

Re: Your fitness goals?
Oh - and years ago - I used to ride my mtn bike a lot. I really enjoyed it. Well my son's did their damage to it (shocking I know) so it stayed hung up in the garage for the last 2 years. I jsut picked it up on Sunday from the bike shop with the intention of getting back out and riding it again. Mostly the same type of trails we wheel on - some single track but nothing too technical.
Anyone up for a ride with a big fat slow old man anytime, let me know. Hopefully when it is not 90* or hotter.

Re: Your fitness goals?
Yes, I have wandered around them on foot a few times. They are one of the reasons I spent over $200 on getting my bike repaired. Going to have to be somewhat cooler before I head up there to ride after work though.

Re: Your fitness goals?
I've never been overweight, but the opposite. I lived most my life (16-30) hovering around 150 lbs, 5'10"ish. I always felt I was too thin.
At 30 I developed a serious case of Grave's Disease (hyperactive thyroid) and dropped to a VERY unhealthy 130 lbs, before being diagnosed. I was in very bad shape mentally and physically, and if I hadn't been diagnosed, I'm not sure I'd be alive today. Thyroid disease can dramatically affect your thought processes, and I was honestly having suicidal thoughts. I was medicated, and recovered, and started maintaining a weight of around 160 lbs.
A couple years after I was diagnosed with Grave's, a friend was diagnosed as well. She saw several different doctors, finally an endocrinologist with a holistic attitude tested her for Celiac's disease (gluten intolerance). Both Graves, and Celiac's (and lots of other diseases) are autoimmune diseases. She cut gluten out of her diet and her Grave's disease went away. I followed suit (much to the chagrin of my endocrinologist) and my Grave's went away. I gained 10 lbs, and started feeling better within 1 week of quitting gluten. 5 years later, I've put on 10 more lbs (180 ish), and am a stronger athlete and healthier person than I ever have been. Most doctors will not admit that the two diseases are related, but I personally know 3 people who have quit gluten and miraculously cured their Graves disease. There are also studies showing that Celiacs and hypothyroidism are linked ( a much more common ailment).
I hunt/hike hard in the summer and fall, and snowboard 2x nearly every weekend during the winter. I don't do any thing else, and don't have a regiment, but am very happy with how I feel.
If anyone is even curious about going gluten free, I highly recommend it. Its free, and it changed my life. There is a new "fad" diet, the Paleodiet that eliminates most grains, and is therefore mostly gluten free. I know several people who are Paleo and feeling much better since switching. A gluten free diet forces you to eat more healthy, no fast food, no processed foods, no premade TV dinner style food, etc. So even if you aren't Celiac, you'll have to eat more healthy. Plus you can still eat all the meat and drink all the coffee you want, so its not as painful as you may think.
If anyone is interested, PM me, or call me, I'd be happy to discuss it in more detail if you are interested. It sounds super tough to get started, but now its just life, and life is good!

Re: Your fitness goals?
Wow! What a trial you went through man! Glad to hear you got through it. Yeah....Gluten=bad. Humans are not designed to digest gluten hence why so many people have what Drs call the Celiac "disease". Here's a great system that incorporates no grains... www.marksdailyapple.comGreat recipes and info.

Re: Your fitness goals?
My goal is to get into a position where I am actually able to worry about getting back in shape! :) I have done the Body for Life training in the past. Good regiment and not too difficult to follow, especially with all the protein shakes and supplements available. Not a lot of time in the gym or doing cardio necessary. Just hiking, golfing and fishing would be my immediate goals when able. The hell with looking purty! Ha!

Primal is very similar to Paleo but slightly less restrictive. We followed Primal starting in January and I'm still basically eating that way. This should take care of your beer needs.... http://www.bardsbeer.com/mobile/Gluten free:)

Re: Your fitness goals?
I've tried a few gluten free beers. Redbridge is terrible. I've had a few that were pretty good though. I'll look around for this one. Ciders are ok, but too sweet to drink more than one or two.
Fleur de Cana is a Nicaraguan rum I've fallen in love with. I found it on a trip to Costa Rica a few years ago. I'll drink it straight, over ice. Especially the 7 & 15 year old stuff is amazing.

Re: Your fitness goals?
I'm definitely a few pounds over where I'd like to be. One of the goals of moving was to get closer to good mountain biking. Eric, I was eyeing the trails all around your place when I was down there. They look like fun! I need to get the fork rebuilt on my bike as I blew the seals out on one side riding up in BC. Greg, fat and slow is about my speed, sounds like we need to go out and mock each other back into shape. I also share your opinion on running-it's for people who are being chased. Really, anyone who is into mountain biking, feel free to PM me. My house is in a great spot to be a gathering point for most of the good riding on the front range and I'm about 10 minutes from I-70. We can fire up the grill there afterwards and replace all those lost calories.
