Ford 9"
Got to thinking about this, couldn't find anything on the interwebs. Does anyone know why Ford went to the trouble of designing their own axle instead of just buying a Dana or something similar?

Could it be the same reason why in the last few years they designed their own diesel?

It was probably a money thing more than anything else. Ford probably wanted to standardize as many parts as it could to minimize costs. They used it in nearly every car/truck line between the '50's and '70's.

Hmmm, I didn't know the 9" was that old. I suppose that more parts were made in-house back then anyway.
