Just talked to Chuck at BC Bronco...guess whats attatched to that coyote motor....yea boy.. 4r70w...with an AOD adapter by AA and the best ford auto in an early bronco with computer adjusted shifting...96 Bronco roller 351w...with gt40 tpi and 4r70w auto trans...I think I have my plan for my build....time to make happen...from dream to reality...one day soon...getting closer...can't do a build without a plan...oh yeah..and lots of $$$ for all these parts...gotta love those 97-2001 explorers...if those soccer moms only knew what was under the hood...LOL.. |

Boy I wish I could find a Lightning motor....anyone know of one please let me know...thx...stock tpi 351w...just drop it in an EB...would make things easy...gotta pay to play...its all about the oh mighty dollar...at the right price someone has one...but with that BC Bronco intake plate at $100 I'll make this work...roller 351w crate motor should do the trick...and all the work justifys remanufactured over junk yard...want this to last another 43 yrs.... |

Finding a true Lightning motor might be a little tough, and not really worth the effort, as it sounds like you may already know. There were only 11k of them produced between 93-95 (the years with the 351W). And considering the earliest of those trucks are now 20 years on the road, most of them would need a complete tear down anyhow. The Lightning motors, as I understand it, were nothing more than a 351W with GT40 iron heads, GT40 style intake manifolds (offset intake runners versus inline like on the regular trucks), hypereutectic pistons, and a 65mm throttle body. The advertised HP was around 240 or so. If I were to build something Lightning-esque, I'd start with a roller 351 block, some forged pistons, aluminum heads, a true Lightning lower intake, and something upwards of a 70mm TB or larger. I wanna say the 95 Cobra R's had a 70. Probably wrong on that though. The BC adapter kit is always an affordable option to the Lightning lower intake. They aren't getting any cheaper or easier to find. There are deals to be had, but you have to keep your eyes open and strike quick if the price is right for you. I'm not sure how the flow or HP numbers look between the two. |

The Lightning lower flows better than the BC adapter. Per Viper, the BC adapter keeps the motor from spinning much more than 4000 rpm. Didn't stop me from buying one when I found a great deal on a used setup. I'm not convinced that it'll make that much of a difference for 90% of the driving my rig sees. |

I owned an 85 mustang GT 5.0 back in the day when I was a young spud...can't stop myself from getting caught up in all this interchange hotrod stuff..back to reality...for as much as I use this truck ....to through all that money at something I don't need or will use when I need so many other things...priotities...trying to get a reasonable plan..most bang for my buck...can't stop from dreaming though...part of the fun with these..wondering what your old bronco can be....like they say be all you can be...these trucks are sure worth it...can't wait to give mine a new life with a great build to last another 43 yrs.... |
