I was reading on a hot rod site about fire extinguishers. There is a lot of good info here. What I learned and wanted to share is that the powder in common ABC fire extinguishers packs together and turns into a solid lump. This is worse in extinguishers in cars due to the vibrations. So you should turn your fire extinguisher upside down and thump on it with a rubber mallet every few months. I checked mine out and they are all packed solid. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/show ... p?t=639764 |

So not getting around to mounting mine and letting it roll around under the passenger's seat was actually a safety measure? |

lol. Probably turns out to be good preventative maintenance. Until it accidentally goes off. |

I was working in a sheet metal plant at one time and on every fork lift there was a fire extinguisher. Well the guy at the time was a complete idiot. He had backed into a rack of material and knocked the extinguisher off and it exploded once it hit the floor. Made a huge mess and was hard to breathe in the plant. Sweeping up the powder was the difficult part trying to breathe. This same guy went on and rammed the forklift into a natural gas line and broke it then drove off and didnt tell anyone. |

That pink Cuda I had posted pictures of here previously. Well by buddy had never started it, one day decides to do so. Puts the charger on the battery, cranks and cranks... no go. So he pours some gas down the carb to prime it, still no fire. Next he sprays starting fluid in - now he has a big ole fire. Well his son - 16 yrs old is quick on his feet and grabs the extinguisher and extinguishes that fire... no there was not an air cleaner installed. Yes, I did go over and pull the carb, blow all the ports, jets and other assorted orifices out vacumed the intake and called it good. Then I adjusted the timing. Mucho varoom varoom then! |

I know from my time in the Navy and dealing with the extinquishing agents we used a lot of Halon in the engine rooms. When the cord was pulled the warning light would come on and you had short period of time forfore the agent would release. |
