Just confirming what I've tracked down elsewhere since the interweb info isn't 100% consistent. I need to make an extension cord for my welder to run it off my dryer outlet. 4 prong dryer outlet, 3 prong welder. The diagram below is correct, right? |

correct except your white while is also a hot. 3prong 220 doesn't have a neutral. |

30ft and 10ga. The welders manual calls for 12ga and a max of 50ft, I figure this will give an added margin. Mine may have a white wire, there is a good chance I'll repurpose a 110 cord. I might sharpie the wire black just to stay closer to code. |

You can run regular 110v (black/white/ground) wire as 220v. I've done it a few spots in my house, bathroom heat, irrigation pump, and my compressor. No recolor coding. In 4 wire 220v the "other" hot line would be red. |

Thanks for the help, guys. Got the cord made up today and testing it didn't let any smoke out of the welder. |
