Post subject:  Ski experts?

I bought some skis at a Black Friday sale. I need new skis, but I could probably make my old ones last another year and return these if they are not right. I'm on the novice side of advanced, or on the advanced side of intermediate. I need an all mountain ski as I like to get into the powder some, but find myself on the fast groomers as well. Not a mogul person tho. I like to take some smaller jumps here and there as well.

The skis I bought are K2's AMP 76ti. They came with matching Marker bindings. I paid just shy of $500.

any input appreciated!

I don't know too much about skis specifically, but I'll give it a try. Most my friends like the K2 stuff.

From the description, it sounds like it is the right ski for your ability. Its not a park ski, the metal & wood construction is stiff & durable.

"Rocker" camber came out about 5 years ago +/-. Depending on the stiffness of the ski, rockers are great in the park (soft) and on a big powder day (stiffer). I have a rocker board, that I love on powder. Put it on mixed, choppy conditions, or worse yet, hard pack, and it "wiggles" all over the place. This is due to the tip & tail not being in contact with the snow. When you don't need the edges (powder) the board is more easily turned, and "buttery" as they say.

Mixed "rocker" and "traditional camber" boards have come out in the last couple years. I bought one before last season, as my daily driver (mostly hardpack & choppy conditions). The traditional camber pushes the front & rear sections of edge into the snow, when you are hard on the edges. On powder the rocker design will still give you some of the buttery feel. I was a little hesitant because of how much I dislike my rocker board on hardpack. I didn't get to ride much last year, but I did take the new board out and really liked it. It was a nice compormise between the two board designs. It didn't feel skittish on the fast groomers/hardpack, and it still gave the quick turnability of the rocker in the steeps. The progressive side cut also helps give additional effective edge in turns, making up for the short comings of the rocker shape.

Sight down the board edge, like checking if a 2x4 is straight. I bet these skis look like a bent/warped mess, kind of interesting.

If I had to pick one board for hardpack & powder, it would be a mixed camber board.

If you keep them post up your thoughts. And post some pics of the Alps!

Awesome Chad, thanks! I was hoping for a response from you!

Looking online, looks like I may have saved $100 +/- with this sale.

I bet you'll like them.

The camber/rocker design may take a little getting used to. My rocker board & my new ramber (rocker/camber) board both feel different than my traditional designed boards. If you never left groomed snow, I'd say forget the rocker and stick with traditional camber. But the rocker tip & tail design is fun, and you'll love it when you hit the pow!

Ok! I guess I'll take my boots in and have the bindings mounted. Have a trip to Chamonix, France in Jan!

Post subject:  Re: Ski experts?

Got to ride my new skis in the French Alps over the weekend and I love them! They carved well, ate up the powder better than my skills allow and kept up with me on the fast groomers! Can't wait for a few more runs!

The top of Aiguelle de Midi was fogged in, so we stuck to the other side of the valley and got some good views. Well, the first day was fogged in, which was a little unnerving skiing on a narrow run with "Cliff" signs all around and only seeing 20-30ft in front of you. But the two subsequent days were clear and beautiful.

I do wish the weather was colder and there was more snow, but it gives me a reason to go back.

Next trip planned for mid-feb in the Interlocken area of Switzerland!!
