You know you can also just take a hunter safety class and that will be enough to satisfy for the permit and it is also cheaper. |

The times, they are a changin... Usually not for the better! I'd be interested to see how the process works for you when you renew since you already had a permit. |

Just checked the el Paso county website and they still allow the hunters course. I guess different county have different rules |

The county sheriff issues the permit, and I think has some say in what kind of class is accepted. When I did my class, I was told there were classes with no live shooting, some places accepted them, but Gunnison did not. So I'd say check with your sheriff office. |

I will be doing that training when we return to the states as well. But if you missed the class, I have a friend who is well plugged into that sort of thing and I am sure he'll know if a few ongoing classes, if not one he teaches himself. Let me know if you want his contact. |

And if the newly elected reps get their way, they will repeal the CCW along with the mag limitations. Not holding my breath though |

Why would a bunch of pro gun legislators want to repeal concealed carry? And why would we be happy about that? |

I struggle to believe that will happen. Many of the legislators who voted for the magazine limits & other laws were recalled or faced a close recall. Plus the USSC just forced Illinios to offer CCW, the last state without CCW. I'm not sure too many of these libs have the guts to face off on another gun bill. And didn't the Senate go Repub this Nov, with Dems holding the house? |

Interesting: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/ ... TE=DEFAULT But with a Dem controlled House & Gov, most the pro-gun rights stuff won't pass. |

Personally I like the idea of in-person training over online. But with a caveat. In-person training should occur through certified instructors and the core of the training should focus on where you can/cannot carry and basic legal doctrine of the concealed carry law; no hypothetical "but what if X happens" type BS. Finally, each student should be required to conduct a timed live fire at 25 meters with no more than 2 rounds off paper. Simply to keep people from slinging stray rounds all over the place. |

My idea behind certified instructors is that if the state is going to establish a standard for training then they must have a way of ensuring the standard is being correctly implemented. |

Completely agree. I don't mind people wandering around with a pocketful of lethal force, but I'd like to know that they've got some idea of how and when to use it. I don't really see it as different than my time in driver's ed before piloting 4k lbs of steel projectile around. Or my time in sex ed before piloting...well, you get the idea. |

I did take a lot from my class. I'm not sure what the qualifications for an instructor are, but my instructor was an ex-Federal Marshal. Unfortunately, I received some bad info (where I could/couldn't carry, repercussions of 'brandishing' a weapon). The real reason I took the class, was not to go get my CCW. I wanted to learn to shoot, not target shoot. I used to be the guy at 25 meters taking care to put the bullet on the bullseye. My class was advertised as 1/2 shooting, and had to bring a few hundred rounds. Our first shots were at 2 yards. That was a shocker. The style of "quick" draw, 2 shots to center of mass, was entirely new to me. Lots of fun, and lots to learn. Now, why do we need a class? To me this is a slippery slope. The right to self protection, is a right above and beyond all others. Every animal on this planet will fight tooth & nail to survive until the next day. This is a natural right, not a human right, not a right granted by a Constition, a God, or a Sheriff. That right does not end at my front door, or outside my car, or any other arbitrary location. If I feel a threat, and don't have the money for a class, or the time to wait for the next class, or the money & time to wait for the State to issue my license, I shouldn't have to give up my personal saftey because I haven't jumped through a State defined set of hoops. Poll taxes to exercise the right to vote were deemed unjust, and 'racist' towards people who cannot afford the tax. It is being argued that getting a state ID is too expensive or inconvenient to some, so they don't need an ID to vote. Why should the most basic natural right of self preservation be any more difficult to exercise than the right to vote? The Second Amendment is the only right that we need a state permit for. Odd. |
