I realize this may sound like a dumb question but I recently bought a modern rear view mirror to get some cool built in electronics. It came with the original windshield mounting button with substantial remnants of the windshield from where it originated. I need to remove my button as the new mirror's button has a completely different shape. So now I'm a big scaretty cat about removing my old button. Is there a trick to doing it so I don't damage the glass ? |

I have had some luck with heating the tab and using a gasket scraper to pop it but that is only some success. About 50% of the time the windshield breaks. At my shop safelite refuses to pull the tabs for us as they break too many windshields. Good luck. |

Last time I had a windshield replacement they put the wrong button on the first time and used heat to get it back off. It was a reputable company so I assume they knew what they were doing. |

What they said. Heat gun for a few minutes to soften the glue, then a stiff putty knife forced between the glass and button should pop it off with success more often than not. Bring it over this weekend and I will give it a shot for you (of course if the glass breaks you will need a new windshield) |

I say take your propane torch to the wrecking yard and practice on a couple first. |

We all know that if I wasn't wanting to do this the damned thing would fall off on its own |
