I am rebuilding the 302 in Red. Just rings, bearings, cam and lifters. While cleaning the pistons the right side bank I found a lot more carbon build up in the ring grooves. The left side wasn't bad. Sorry no pictures. I am chasing oil consumption. Cylinders are good, most ware is .0015 and can still see the honing marks form the first build (180,000 miles) . I think the problem was in the heads. I find it strange that one side of the motor had more carbon build up than the other side. Or have I been breathing to much exhaust fumes. |

Compare the heads. Maybe one was replaced. Casting number should be the same and date code should be within about a month. |

I'm no motor guy, but on my old XJ 4.0 head I filled the intake with alcohol and let them sit for a while and 2 of them leaked after several minutes. I'm not sure how valid this test is (youtube/google search) but I did take the head in to get rebuild and it solved my oil blowby issue. |

Comp Cams has just lost me as customer! I ordered one of their cam kits with cam lifters chain and gear set all the goodies. I confirmed with Summit Racing that this would fit the 302 sbf. The fuel pump cam chewed into the timing chain cover while setting the lifters. Cam gear is .117 thicker than the old cam gear. Call Summit..." kit is correct for your application maybe comp cams sent the wrong cam gear. Call comp cams " Call comp cams... " the kit you have is for a 2 piece fuel pump cam you should have ordered a different kit for the one piece fuel pump cam. " Made it sound like it was my fault. Told him there was nothing about one piece or 2 piece fuel pump cams when researching the kit. sorry had to vent |

Did you call Summit back? I'd push a little harder. There should be notation for each option. |

I haven't called Summit back. I had my fill of "phone tech's" for the day.( that and I was on hold for almost hour) I took my anti-stupid people pill and went to the NAPA warehouse and bought another chain and gear set, timing and oil pan gaskets. No one in the Brighton area had a chain and gear set for a SBF. |

Well I got the broken stud out, had to pull the head to do it. My plan is to use the stock valve springs, install a new rocker stud. The cam I installed is Comp Cams 256/268 lift 477/484. The old cam was Comp Cams 260/260 lift 447/447. Will the extra .037 in exhaust be a problem? |
