I'm being lazy
My brother in laws Bronco has developed another problem. Getting on and off the gas results in a loud click noise. Just one click either way. It is loud. To me it sounds as though a drive shaft u joint is clicking back and forth. The u joints are fine though. I even went so far as to remove the rear output shaft from the t case, stick it in 4wd and try it. Still clicks with no change. I am guessing it is slop between the transmission output shaft and t case input. I've heard of the autos having this problem but never the manuals. I've heard it is slop between the output of the trans and the input of the t case. It is a np435 and stock j shift dana 20. I just had everything apart 3 months ago for the clutch and everything looked fine. Sounds as though it started making noise immediately, nothing got louder, it just suddenly started clicking on his way home from work. Any ideas? I'm guessing it needs a new trans and t case. I've got a spare t case, anyone want to sell me an np435?

Re: I'm being lazy
I have the NP435 I took out of mine laying around. I was going to throw it up on CL and CCB. It has the AA D20 adapter already installed.

Re: I'm being lazy
My NP435 has that sound too, it was the input shaft (I think). I did a total rebuild including and problem went away.

Re: I'm being lazy
In case anyone needs this in the future, I finally found the problem. As I suspected the output of the transmission lost its splines inside the spud shaft. It was very rusty inside the spud. All the splines are gone. Time for a new trans and spud. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Re: I'm being lazy
Just adding a couple of pics. I got a "new" transmission from digger yesterday and got it replaced so he is back on the road again.
