Post Best supplier of collapsible steering shaft
I have my 4x4x2 box installed & my upper column. I was going to make a collapsible steering shaft from the 79 Bronco shaft, but I've decided I should just buy one premade.

What is the best route for getting one. I saw WH makes them to order. Any other suggestions?

Stock 76 upper with a lower made from a solid d shaft on mine. Ended up being about 2/3 the cost of the WH unit.

Mine is from Wild Horses, I think they are actually made by Flaming River.

Thanks. Found Toms has them too, but I'm leaning towards WH. Looks a little nicer than Toms.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the 4x4x2 box has a different size input than the stock box. I'm going to double check now.

3/4" x 36 spline vs 13/16" x 36 spline for the stock stuff.

I was looking at that one too. I have a stock box but a 73-75 column so Viperwolf said that lower would not work.

Post Re: Best supplier of collapsible steering shaft
I *think* I figured a cheapo way out of this. I have a 3/4"x36 (x2) ujoint I was given years ago. This will fit the 4x4x2 box and the lower part of the 79 Bronco collapsible shaft. The upper part of the lower shaft is probably 3/4"DD. I need to double check the 3/4"DD measurements against Borgeson's info, my battery died in my calipers. If it is 3/4"DD, I can add a universal 1"DD above it, and a 1"DD x 3/4"x36 ujoint to attach at my upper steering shaft. Pics to come, if this works. It will save me about $100, since I already have the lower ujoint. Summit has slightly better prices than Borgeson direct. If you buy 2 ujoints & the 1"DD shaft, you are almost the same price as buying Toms or WH, so no reason to do this.

3/4"DD & 1"DD measurments are on the bottom of page 4 here:

FYI. My upper is 3/4" 36 spline. It was a Tom's P/S conversion kit from 15+ years ago. Not sure if that was a stock configuration, or something Toms was having made. I can't even remember if the upper was part of the kit.

The catalog link I posted above has all their u-joints listed, you can find about any combo, like Viper said.

My plan worked out. Only used 8.25" of the 1"DD tubing. This could be an affordable option if you have the 78/79 steering shaft & the lower joint is good. I removed the original because I had the new one, but if the old one was ok, you'll just need the 1"DD tube & upper joint. Even used the 78/79 boot between the two halves of the collapsible shaft. Will get it painted & installed soon. Need to paint the 4x4x2 box, and a few other odds & ends.
