Post The BEST writeup on the 4R70W transmission...
I've been researching different tranny options to mate up with the 427 I'm building and will most likely go with the 1998 - 2001 4R70W. Below is the best writeup on it that I have found.

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/tr ... ndex.shtml

Thought I'd share.

Haven't had a chance to read your link, looks like a lot more info. Here is a pretty good one I found a while back:

That's a great article also! This is good stuff to accumulate prior to buying one of these trannys. What's interesting is the author suggests that the 1999 - 2001 4.2L V6 version of the tranny is the best one that will bolt directly to the Windsor engines. Apparently it has all the best internals etc. From everything else I've read I was under the impression it was the 1998 - 2001 Explorer V8 version.

Anyway, good info, thanks.

that would be very unusual if a V6 version would be designed for more durability than a V8......................especially when your wanting to mate it up to a bad ass 351 / 427

I agree that doesn't make sense. I remember reading that when I first found the article. The main point I took away from the article was to choose a 99 or newer trans, and that the 4.2 V6 had the same bellhousing design as the Windsor V8. Everything else could be upgraded during a rebuild. Since I'm not in the market for a new trans, that page was filed away for future reference. I guess I'm going to have to sit down and reread the article, and read airbur's in its entirety. I find lots of stuff that I just save for later, because it seems I can cram only so much info into my brain.

Yep, I agree.

I'm compiling all the info on EFI, the engine, tranny, controllers, computers, harnesses etc etc and keeping all the links to these good articles. This will be the tranny that I use so these writeups are invaluable.
