Post Wiring issue - Any ideas??
Okay so something in the steering wheel on the steering column is causing our stereo and gauge cluster lights to go out when the wheel is turned. It's not consistent but is happening more and more frequently. When the gauge cluster lights go out, the lights, turn signals, and everything electrical still works. My son said he saw sparks come out of the column by the turn signal assembly but I haven't been able to see them. I can understand a wire in there might be shorting out but would think it's only the horn and turn signals not the gauge cluster lights and stereo. I double checked and there are no wires disconnected or any without a connector or bare metal showing.

I was going to pull the steering wheel late last night but couldn't find my puller to see if there was a wire grounding out under it or not.

I'm assuming it's a wire grounding but wanted to post this and see if anyone else has seen this before.

Thanks,

Jeff

My guess is either the red (brake sw to turn sw) wire or one of the rear stop/turn wires (yell and grn) is worn bare and shorting to ground. The brake switch is powered by the half of the headlight sw that supplies current to the cluster lights. There is a thermal breaker in each half of the headlight switch which is probably opening when the short occurs.

You'll need to remove the turn signal switch and wiring to inspect/fix it. Might be better just to replace it.

thanks for the quick response. I'll pick a new one up on Saturday from Bronco Hut just in case before I go yanking the wheel off.

Thanks,

Jeff
