Post Ignition Problem
I have an ignition problem. I installed an MSD Ready to Run distributor, Street Fire wires and a Blaster II coil. Timing I believe is set correctly, but I have no power until higher rpm (2200 or so). I played with the advance, BTDC, and did not have good acceleration and power until I was pushing 22 degrees BTDC. That cannot be correct. What am I doing wrong? My 1969 shop manual states that initial timing should be 6* BTDC at 650-1000 rpm idle. At that setting, my Bronco has no power. Can anyone HELP?

Ford had timing markers for driver side and some for passenger side on various small blocks. This difference required balancers that were marked differently. You could have a miss-matched set. It's also possible for the balancer ring (where the timing marks are) to slip around the assembly. You might want to verify #1 cylinder is at TDC when the timing marks say they are. Other than that the cam could be retarded or timing chain stretched out.

Thanks Viperwolf, I did have the thought that the timing chain may be 1 tooth off. The previous owner did say the motor had been rebuilt, but I do not know how well rebuilt. What do you think about just leaving the advance where it is to run good? Any potential for damage?

It'll probably be fine like that if it doesn't ping or run hot. It would be a good thing to check TDC though. The balancer ring can come off if it's loose enough. That could cost a radiator.

I did verify #1 to TDC at the 0 on the timing ring. I do have some faith in your suggestion of the timing marker ring shifting because again at initial timing setting, the truck will start, but just has no power at all. I'm going to see if I cam move the ring and go from there. Thanks for the help.
