Time to switch oil?
So when I got my engine rebuilt, the engine builder recommended VR1 10w-50 Racing Oil because of the zinc content. I have since changed the cam from a flat tappet to a roller cam with a roller lifter kit.
So should I change to standard motor oil now? I've got about 5000 miles on the engine since the rebuild. What should I be using? For what it's worth, I've been using the Baldwin filters.

Re: Time to switch oil?
I'd stick with an oil with a high zinc content. It can't hurt. My machine shop recommended Rotella T after I have used up all my racing oil.
The alternative is to use an additive. BG MOA for instance.

Re: Time to switch oil?
Rotella changed their formula and cut back on the zinc a lot. I used to run just regular Valvoline. Now I run Amsoil ZRod oil. Flat tappet or not high zinc is good to have.

Re: Time to switch oil?
Right or wrong I'm running plain ole Valvoline 5W-30 with a 1994 block and roller cam.

I run 10w -40 Lucas Hot Rod and classic oil. High zinc content only reason not to use high zinc oil is if you have a catalictic convertor. Shell has changed formula on Rotella less zinc .
