Older video of my bronco dropping into Independence trail...

Postby crawlercreations » Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:07 pm

Had a great trip! This was the first trip out on the new paint and some body work....probably not the best trail to break that in on! Really didn't take on too much body damage but it was fun!

You won't if you like your body panels! It is a definite body beater unless you go super slow and are willing to winch sideways and have people around you that are very patient. There are several areas that are almost guaranteed to do some body damage. I dented my drivers door, passenger door, both rear lower quarter panels, right front grille and rf fender. None of it very bad but I am not as concerned about body damage obviously! If you decide to run it I will run it with you....just be prepared for body damage!!

The "easy" side would probably be better suited for you. It is still quite difficult but less likely to damage the body as much. I ran it by myself last year with my hardtop on and only rubbed a tree with it. It is rated a 7 on the easy side and a 9 on the hard side according to traildamage.com . It is the Liberty trail: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=141

The trail in the video is Independance(low end of 9, high end of 10): http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=159

And the trail I took on the most damage and broke a rear axle on is Patriot(low end of 9, high end of 10+): http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=160

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the sign there at the first ledge says that a locker in both axles is required, a winch & a minimum tire size of 35" doesn't it?

It says it is recommended, not required. I realize I didn't have a winch at that time but all it took was a little tug with a friends winch to get me out of the exit with 3 wheel drive. I drove everything else in 3 wheel drive including the a-hole where the axle broke. I recommend anyone that wants to drop in that trail has a locker front and rear, 35s and a winch as well! I have all of them now. I may also recommend extra lighting as that trail seems to always take longer than expected!

Ha ha...I have a friend who was a competition crawler that used to use Indy & Freedom as his practice runs and he put rock lights on his buggy for that exact reason. After he did that, he started running it at night.

Liberty is still doable w/ lockers and 35's. We run it frequently. I wouldn't attempt either Indy or Patriot w/ anything less than 37's, lockers and little regard for body damage and breakage. I ran the trail when it first opened w/ 35's and lockers. I have no desire to attempt Indy w/ 37's, lockers and the body damage I already have. Indy is not short wheel base friendly....
