Post Ouray 4-Wheeling Trip
I am planning to do some wheeling in and around Ouray for the second weekend in August. We'll probably leave Denver on August 8th or 9th and return to Denver August 12 or 13th. Let me know if you are interested and if you want to camp or stay in a motel. This is prime time, so we'll need to make reservations soon. If you have recommendations, please post. Thanks.

I'll make it if I can, but I can't commit. I'll have to see how things are going at work, I have a lot to learn about staffing my new business. Might just drive down for a day or two.

We are deffinitely interested. Some friends of ours made the trip last year and we couldn't go. Don't wanna make that mistake again. We would plan on camping; either tent or truck camper. Post the details as soon as you have them. We'll wait to see how they develop. popcorn

Guys there is a park up above Ouray on the national forest, no amenities, but has a beautiful view, a rock firepit & a creek. Most don't know it exists. I take my boy and his friends camping over there at least once a year. pop-ups and (if your good) up to 22' bumper pulls can get in & plenty of room to turn around & set up. If yall are interested pm me & I'll give directions. It's probably one of the better kept local secrets & is a great spot. takes @ 10 minutes to get down & into Ouray, bout 15 to Ridgway.

I've made my reservations at the Ouray KOA for Aug. 9-13 . Their phone number is 800 562-8026. They have 6 tents sites, 2 back end hook ups and a possible pull thru site still available. And they have trailer parking across the street for trailers whose vehicles are trailer Queens-Mine Included.

Sarah and our Grandson, Ty, will be coming for the trip. We plan to arrive Thursday mid-morning and take an easy run, probably Red Mountain Mining Area or Engineer's Pass if we get started earlier.

I will lead a trail ride to Imogene Pass. A lot of you asked where I got the picture in the February 2012 calendar for the Classic Broncos. I think this is it, and now you can have your own pic and be "famous", HA. We will stop in Telluride to tour the town and then take the highway back to Ouray. We will do this ride on Friday or Saturday. Let me know which day works better for everyone.

I would like to run Poughkeepsie Gulch and/or Mineral Creek but have never been on these trails. If anyone is has been on them, you can certainly lead the group. If not, we'll take off and run it together.

If you decide to stay in or around Ouray, let me know the dates you would be available to run the trails. Looking forward to some great scenery and wheeling with everyone.

Post Re: Ouray 4-Wheeling Trip
On your way back from Telluride take Last Dollar Road, MUCH Prettier than dropping down keystone & coming through placerville & sawpit. here's a clip from http://ridgwaycolorado.com/about-ridgway/day-trips/ that gives directions from Ridgway, but it's the airport road from Telluride. Any local can tell ya where to turn.

From Ridgway, take Highway 62 west over Dallas Divide for approximately 12 miles. Watch for the sign for Last Dollar Road. It will be a left turn off the highway onto a dirt road. At the fork you may go right and follow the road into the town of Sawpit. Or continue left on Last Dollar Road (638) into Telluride. At the Telluride airport Last Dollar becomes a paved road then junctions with highway 145. Turn left and take 145 into the town of Telluride or go right, then shortly turn left and take 145 up to Mountain Village and ride the free gondola down into town.

You can also Search Last Dollar Road and get tons of photos & directions on the net.

A great place to stop for a burger is in Ridgway right across from the city park is at the True Grit Cafe. Great atmosphere and there's more room than ya think. It's right next to the old fire station (Oh the dances we used to have there after fair!)

Any local Q's yall have just lemme know!

Booger,
Camp Bird is up the switch backs headed south up Red Mtn. Takes ya back behind Sneffles or Imogen Pass. The spot I'm talking about is headed north from Ouray towards Ridgway & right behind Mt. Baldy. But I have to say I do love the road you're talking about! Here's a neat site you might like, gives some great details of the trails around. http://www.narrowgauge.org/4x4/html/4X4.html The guy has some entertaining stories, but it has some good info & pics as well.

Looks like I'll not be going to Ouray this weekend. I had a shop install a Howell EFI system in early June and it has not been working very good. The shop is a Howell distributor and has installed many Howell systems. After several replacement parts sent by Howell, installed and several test runs, I called Howell and told them about how poorly the Bronco is running. Howell told me last week that I have to install a DUI distributor to work with their system. I ordered the distributor but I have not received it. I just don't feel comfortable traveling that far without a tried and proven Bronco.

I think the Howell system manages the spark etc in the distributor. I have the Pertronix in mine and it works very well. Are you running a conventional with points at this time.

All the Howell uses is a tach signal. If your running points then maybe possible if the gap and dwell are not correct.

You are right now that you mention that, it gets the spark off the coil right. Thats about it.

Rob, I don't know enough to answer your question. That is why I paid a shop to install the Howell EFI System. Ever since it was installed, the Bronco has run like crap. The last time I took it out, it did not have enough power to climb back on my flat bed trailer. Howell has sent a new computer, oxygen sensor and throttle body. The shop has changed out these parts and it still doesn't run very good and dies when I stop or idle for a few seconds. Howell sent a tach relay but didn't want the shop to install it until we replaced the old distributor which had the Petronic with the DUI distributor. Got the DUI today and will install it tomorrow. Hopefully this will cure my lack of power and backfiring problems. The bad part is Howell originally told the shop to install the Petronics in the first place. banghead
