Gears and Cheers on Jan 28th

Postby Kinder » Thu Jan 05, 2023 12:17 pm

All are welcome to help, harass and hangout while I help Flatheadpopup (Tony) upgrade his front & rear axles. We'll be installing a limited slip diff with new gears and seals in his D44 housing and also swap in a limited slip diff into the 9" carrier. Everything is out of the Bronco to make life easier. The plan is to start around 9am in my garage and be done when the work is done. I'll provide beverages, entertainment and food (maybe elk green chili if that'll entice folks show up). If you need my address send me a PM. If you can make it post up here so I can get an idea of attendance.

I will be in attendance, lol. I can't wait to meet some more of the group and move my project forward in a big way. Thanks Kirk, I really appreciate your help with this.

I would be interested in coming down. I have been really needing to replace the rear 9" ARB flange cap for the last 2.5 years. I would prefer to have someone more experienced with gear patterns available to help ensure the gear patterns stay the same once I replace the flange cap kit.

So-- I do not want to hi-jack the progress/intnetion of the day- but is it possible for me to bring down the 3rd member and work on it there?

Thanks Kirk for having this event. Great elk green chili !!

So on the way home the bronco lost the dash lights and ten miles farther the wipers quit working.
It's always something.

Thanks Kirk for hosting this event.

It was great to get a refresher on setting up gears and doing the surgery on Eck's ARB gives me the confidence to dive back into mine.

I agree with Bob, that elk green chili was awesome!

Thanks for hosting. Miss club garage days like this!

Learned how to put together a Dana 44 for the first time, how to do corrective surgery on a 9” ARB, and do math!

Elk chili was awesome.

Before surgery gear pattern just so there is proof we were doing something.

Thanks for hosting this awesome event Kirk. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and am grateful for all the help. I will pile on with a "the elk chili was awesome!" comment. Hope to meet even more of the Bronco community soon.

Gears and Cheers on Jan 28th

Postby Kinder » Sun Jan 29, 2023 12:42 pm

Fellas, it was nice to get back together and host an event, it’s been too long.

The lack of picture taking will have to be addressed at the next event, we’ll designate a picture taker going forward.

Tony’s
- Empty D44 housing had the seals replaced and stuffed with a Eaton limited slip and new gears, plus all new bearings
- Newly acquired 9 in carrier was upgraded to a Easton limited slip

Mike’s
- ARB in the 9 in carrier was R&R’d with a new part that was causing a leak

Plenty of helping, hanging out and harassment occurred.

Really wish I could have made this. Someday, maybe in March, my kids will have a break from their activities.

Got the 9" back together and she holds air and doesn't appear to have any more leakage. Now I am trying to fight a drum brake situation. I couldn't get the drum back on the driver side without adjusting the shoes all the way down and it was still a bit of a struggle to get the drum on. Once I got the tire on, it doesn't seem to turn very freely and I haven't even adjusted them back out at all. I will add that I have not yet filled the center section with oil so maybe it is just tight?

Maybe loosen the backing plate bolts. Put the drum on to let it "self center" it self. Then retighten the backing plate bolts.

Gears and Cheers on Jan 28th

Odd, I’ll guess the drum came off easily? One of the shoes may be mis-aligned or likely out it’s normal position. Check the top and bottom where it engages the wheel cylinder and the adjuster.

One shoe was high and in the wrong spot. Pried it over into its correct slot and everything is now working as expected.
