I was talking to my Dad and he said he thought my Bronco had a limited slip in the front. I know from wheelin this weekend that it wasn't working. Does anyone know if they put limited slip in the Dana 44's and if so, how to identify it? I know they had factory limited slip in the rear axle on some Broncos but wasn't aware if they came that way in some front axles.

I believe that in 72/73 they stopped putting them in the fronts. The stock limited slips are not the greatest by they do work. If you do have one it might need to be rebuilt. The clutch packs do wear out.

They put them in the 44s all the way up to at least 74 that I know of. My uncle has a 74 with LS in both axles.

Anybody ever rebuild a limited slip 44? How much is involved? Maybe I'll look at doing that this fall.

I went with the Dana Power Lock at $309 as I don't plan to wheel my (grandson's) rig too hard but wanted to make through what most open carriers cant.

I believe the front LS was always available but it required a rear LS first. The axle code on the VIN plate will be 3 characters and will end in either Q or 8 for a D44 with a LS in both axles. Q includes PS.

I have a Lock Right in the front of mine and never had any trouble, even after breaking several u-joints and an axle shaft or two:

Definitely not worth rebuilding the stock unit. It would have to come out anyway so why not replace it with newer. The stock ones can wear out with one hard wheeling trip.
