Post Edelbrock Carb Rebuild
My Edelbrock 1405 600 CFM Carb is running extremely rich for the Denver altitude. My emmission test scores were off the charts. I would like to rebuild it and need to order the parts. I am thinking I will need to order the Edelbrock 1477 - Performer Carb Maintenance Kit and a new vacuum gauge. I am curious what else I should order (floats, calibration kit #1479, offroad needle, jets, etc.) so I can do this in one swoop with little downtime.

I'd recommend the calibration kit (I've used it before to set my old mustang up for different elevations), but not the offroad needle/jet kit, unless you are actually going to take it off-road and/or you are experiencing flooding due to extreme angles you are driving in the Costco parking lot laughing2

Chad, thank for asking this. I'm going to be rebuilding my 1406 shortly and have exactly the same question, but for a more trail oriented application. Also, my local O-Reilly carries Edelbrock stuff, so you may be able to get everything you need through them. Prices appear to be fairly close.

Post Re: Edelbrock Carb Rebuild
You really only need the recalibration kit, unless the carb is really old and the internal parts are old, you don't need to rebuild. you recalibrate by changing your jets, metering rods and metering rod springs.

The top comes off to change the jets, I never was able to change the jets through the metering rod holes because of how small they are. The kit should come with a fairly simple chart with information on how to change and which ones to use. It is a trial and error, once you have your known jet sizes (the ones inside it now) then you can change your jet sizes and metering rods as per the chart. sometimes you may need to try different combos. If you have the right jet size then you can change jet sizes really easily as well as the springs.

I hope this helps.

Sorry I Got busy at work and forgot to answer you. But what shawn said. You dont need to rebuild. Just order the calibration kit. Let me know when you get it and we can work from there.

Post Re: Edelbrock Carb Rebuild
That is great information guys I really appreciate the help. I was going to have a guy in Wheat Ridge rebuilt it, but with the advice from the club I should be able to do it. Plus, knowing how to work on it will make trail repairs and tuning easier down the road. I doubt that it needs a full rebuild but I may clean it up since it has sat for a while.

Justin - I will check the local parts stores and see if they can help me out. I love Summit since they have everything and in stock.

ZOSO - I will take care of my fuel line elbow issue and add a pressure regulator as you suggested.

I got an article from Steve on cb.com that shows the process for making it more off road oriented with off road needles and blocking the valve between the two sides. I am likely not going that direction but I can forward the .doc to anyone else interested. I may try to post it here tmro as well.

I'm planning to rebuild mine since my truck was sitting for 5 years before I bought it and I need to replace my intake gaskets anyway. I'd be down to get together and rebuild them at the same time so that we have one to reference as we rebuild the other if needed.

My edelbrock ran smooth and started easily but when I put the nose in the air it would flood. Scared the pee out of me on a steep hill where stopping or backing down would have been a bad option.

I've run my Edelbrock for 15 years and never had any trouble. I installed the spring loaded needles, tuned for altitude, that's it. The carb got rebuilt a few years ago, but didn't really need it.

Good to know Gunni. I ordered a rebuild kit and spring adjustment kit from Advance. Had a 35% off and shipping is free over $75.00 so for around $80.00 for both kits. I am really excited to tear into it next week.

Post Re: Edelbrock Carb Rebuild
You shouldn't need to rebuild it Justin even though it sat that long. There are no gaskets below the fuel level like a Holley so only gasket is top one. Chad you either. These are pretty good carbs as it is. I agree with Cortez about the Qjet and I have one sitting in the garage but since I found out some of the tricks I haven't had a problem with the Edelbrock. Used to have issues but it runs great now. I created an Excel spreadsheet to find what different rod and jet combos do to a/f ratio. Zoso and I have 3 different kits (2 Edelbrock kits for different size carbs and a Carter universal kit with more combos) so we were able to find other combos than just what is listed in the Edelbrock booklet.

You tracked it on a spreadsheet? Now you are talking my language! Nice! You and ZOSO have this down to a science. When I get my kit and tear into it, I will be looking you guys up.

Yep chad just give me a call. Get yourself a couple cans of carb cleaner. Thats all you'll need.

Like the old man said you probably dont need to rebuild it. His sat for 2 yrs and it didnt run right. All I had to do was take the carb off and clean it out with carb cleaner.
