I just went thru this a few weeks ago!

Forever, especially with Comcast's 250gb monthly limit. I've got 6TB of storage over 4 drives, so it isn't as big a deal if I lose just one drive. That said, I'd be downloading for a really, really long time. I need to find a way to do a backup that I can store remotely, but haven't wanted to put the money into it.

I was reading here, because I remembered this post & my subscription to AVG is expiring (finally!). I have an older machine, and AVG was a great improvement when I changed from Norton years ago. But AVG seems slow & bloated now (like early Firefox vs new Firefox).

I don't mind paying for antivirus, but if I could avoid it with freeware it would be great.

If there is an antivirus program that is light on resources, I'd be happy to pay for it. Suggestions?

Is it free forever? Or does it expire? I thought I loaded it onto my friend's laptop and 90 days later his computer imploded. I have to qualify that statement, he is a moron. A friend, but a moron.

Thanks for the info on Avast. I'm sure my friend didn't pay attention to what was going on. From his description of events, it sounds like malware infected his computer & he actually gave his info & cc# to the infecter & then things went south. Like I said, he's a moron, when it comes to computers.

So now that you've got the engine, where you headed next? Sit on it for 6-8 months seems to be about the norm. Do you have a nice place picked out for it in the garage?

Unfortunately the did not review avast for some reason. I've had pretty good experiences with Avast in the little that I've used it and it's well reviewed elsewhere. Probably worth a shot for free. Personally I don't run AV as I hate the performance impact it has on the system and the annoying popups for anything and everything.

I've never run free AV, so pop-ups aren't a problem, but I don't like the slow down, especially as my old machine keeps getting older. So I'll keep reading, I've got like 45 days to do something.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on one of my computers. Seems to run faster than the Norton I get for free from Comcast and I have very little issue with spyware and the like.

Yeah, Norton crippled two of my office machines when I owned my own store. That is when I switched to AVG.

AVG was killing my machine with the updates. I ended up having to move the updates to late at night and then add new software to shut my computer down. Still running it, but it sounds like I should remove it and run Avast. I need whatever resources I can free up!
