Any bird hunters???
Are there any bird hunters out there?
I just got back from a pheasant hunt in nebraska. Didnt shoot too good this year. I gotta get some practice in. Pretty sad shooting actually. I shot one bird that was maybe 10 yards out and with a dead on shot 12ga #4 shot modified choke there was nothing left of the bird. Had a hole in the side of it about as big as a pop can. We hit a spot and must have had 20+ roosters flyin out of it. I had probably 7 fly over me and I missed all but one. Didnt hit it hard enough and it hit the ground running and it was gone.
Gonna go get some practice this next weekend and maybe the the weekend after so when I go back out over thanksgiving Im not such a bad shot. After that trip it's time to sit in the goose blind some.

Pheasant are tough enough to hit and it isn't any easier when you haven't picked up a shotgun since last goose season. I haven't shouldered a shotgun in probably 20 yrs. Been thinking of maybe getting into it. Just gotta get in some practice.

Re: Any bird hunters???
On the drive back today we saw 5-6 roosters in paole(sp?) along highway 6. They were fighting right along the highway. They are out there. But more out in nebraska. I wanna go hunt the dakota's once or twice(attn DAN!!).

Re: Any bird hunters???
I go out with the father-in-law 3-4 times a year. He has a brintney which went through some intense (9 weeks) training and is amazing to watch. Had planned on going out last Sunday but didn't work out which sucked as 3 weeks ago I had some great practice with a 100-round sporting clays course.

My poor old Chessy is going to try his hand at Pheasants for the first time. He's been Dove hunting, but always ate the first bird. I hope the pheasants are big enough that he doesn't try that. Just not sure his hips can keep up. We'll be medicating him.

Re: Any bird hunters???
So how did everybody do? We were in Yuma for the opener too. I sucked, but both boys and the rest of the group did good. 38 birds for the weekend with 10 hunters! Banquet was good too! Here's a pick we took at lunchtime on Saturday.

Re: Any bird hunters???
Got skunked! We had a small group and could not corral the birds. They were jumping up like late season birds! I think we managed 6 in our group of 6 for two days. Actually only had four of us on Sunday.
You were at the Banquet? Pretty good showing there!

Re: Any bird hunters???
JD - We were at the banquet. We go every year. Seemed like a good turn out. Quality of raffle prizes was down a bit, but still good and still brought in good money for Pheasants Forever. Where do you hunt out there? Private or Public?

Re: Any bird hunters???
Someone needs to set up a place/time for all of us to hunt. I'd be in. I could probably get my dad, bro in law, and his dad to go also. I've never pheasant hunted in colorado. wouldnt know where to go.

Re: Any bird hunters???
That was my first PF banquet. I won a hat door prize, but that's it, besides the "beer mug".
We hunted public. Started out at the Sand & Sage area, then just drove all over creation hunting field corners that were newly listed on the website. Mostly SE of town a half hr or so. I was lost most of the time being my first time out there.
From what I heard, those in big groups did well, but like us, those with small didn't. We probably walked over more birds than we saw, even tho we had plenty of dog power. Sadly, out of the 100 rnds I took, I shot ZERO and lost three! I need a new vest! (which I put the majority of my tickets in for the raffle...)

Re: Any bird hunters???
We have hunted out there for the last 7 or so years. Always hit the PF Banquet. My youngest won a gun last year. The guy I hunt with was out this morning again in a group of 2, they limited out before 8. Birds are great, we have a lot of private land to hunt. If I could invite others I would, but it is not my deal and I am glad I am able to get out there with my boys. I know a lot of the walk in areas put out a lot of birds last weekend.
