awesome i bought a 76 a year or so ago. didnt realize 25 year rule had changed will have to check if it had collector plates before. i hope so, a little nervous now.

thats awesome. i have another question, i have a 77 f250 crew cab gvw is over 8000 pounds. i was told i do not have to get emissions and can get collector plates. is this true? wanted to find out before calling the state and talking to 80 people who dont know or care.

also with that bronco. if i license it in unincorporated jefferson county can i go that route to get away from smog, and catalytic converters and yearly emissions. thanks for all the help. cannot stand dealing with the state of these issues

According to this: your 77 is still required to submit to the two speed test. You should just sell it to me and get rid of that headache. As to unincorportated JeffCo, I cannot tell by looking at the maps if there are portions of JeffCo which are exempt. I would think entire counties are included in the program, not just specific areas or towns.

ok just thought i would post up here on what i learned taking my 76 through the registration and emissions process. I asked a bunch of questions along the way.
For my 76 and I assume the 77 is the same, you must have a catalytic converter and air pump on the truck, this is required as they were federally mandated on those years.
The test consists of a visual inspection to make sure you have an air pump and cat, your gas cap is present and on the vehicle and a tail pipe sniffer test at idle and 2500 RPM's (or there about)
The guy who did my test - he has been doing them for over 20 years says that as long as you have the air pump, cat and pass the sniffer test your golden. He also said it does not matter what engine you have in the vehicle the test goes by the VIN# and year of the vehicle not the engine. He has seen guys come in with classic cars and trucks with 2010 EFI engines in them, as long as they keep the smog pump an cat on they are within colorado state and in my case Denver county law.
I did not have the emission hardware on my engine for the smog pump. So i routed the smog pump to Y right before the cat and he said that was fine.
Also if you have a model year 1976 or newer you can not get collectors plates, must be 1975 or earlier, no matter what model of vehicle.
He also mentioned that if you go by the mobile testing stations and your truck registers on it as pass you dont have to go in for the emissions inspection. However you must pass the mobile sniffer 3 times in less than a year to pass.
Anyway i know some or all of this is around just thought i would post up my experiences in case it helps someone out.
Here is the guy i used, hes an independent tester.. also does VIN verifications so that was nice. Hes a bit cocky but if you dont push him hes a nice guy and was great to chat with.. has a nice blown chevy in the shop too ;)

ya and one thing i forgot to mention was he did seem to hint at the fact that if there was no provision for an air pump then it would not be required, in other words no hardware or documentation on the engine.. no requirement. In my case there was a sticker on the valve cover which looks like the original valve cover (i think the block was swapped at some point) and it stated emissions blah blah blah and I had a backet on the top of the engine.. so.. you are probably right there are exceptions, i think it will just matter what person you talk to or test with and hopefully you can get someone who is worth a damn.. most of the people who do the test have no clue whats going on.
