Here it is, not pretty but a real screamer when I did drive it. She'll need freshening up a bit for this application. In it's current state it barely runs on pump gas sounds like the early chevrolet diesels they put in their pick-ups, it takes 2 cans of octane booster to get it to stop. Yeah that's going to have to change. I have high hopes for this project.

Man I love those old FE's. I'm real partial to them. Wish I still had my '67 GT with the 428CJ I built for it. I bet it rattles if that thing has the old high compression pistons in it. I wanna see it when you get it stuffed in the Bronco.

I to love FE's. Put on a set of alum. heads and an alum. intake and they weigh about the same as a 351 W. They make good power and are bullit proof.

I love FE's myself. I had owned a few as well. I only wish I had the dough it takes to build a good strong one. Ended up trading my 69 S code Mustang for the EB because of that reason.

And so it begins - strip her down and off to the machine shop, some measurements to determine the assemblies actual condition and go from there.

Only if she's following this string, i.e. "what they don't know won't hurt us"

The block, heads etc. are at the machine shop "Pueblo Crankshaft". Anyway I thought I would get back to the drive line, namely the transmission and transfer case. The NP 435 I have is set up for HD trucks F600 etc. w/ a 35 spline output shaft - Yes Virgina there is a 35 spline output shafts on NP 435's, you just don't see them very often. It looks a little strange from the back because it has the emergency brake mount on the tail-housing.

I'm using the adapter housing (NP 435 to EB Dana 20)from Toms Bronco Parts basically because I wanted a CI piece, which as luck would have it, cost less as well. A note for anyone thinking about a 435 swap. If you do not use the specified trans i.e. F-100 through F-350 - 2WD models you will have to change the output shaft (28 spline). And if you are not using the specified case casting you'll be shimming the adapter, the shoulder / snap ring on the output shaft bearing for the HD case sticks out a little farther than the standard case, Due to the larger input shaft setting things back a little and when you torque it down it binds the shaft. 0.60 for mine. If the Input shaft looks long, that's because it is. In order to use it behind the FE it has to be 1-1/4" longer then it's small block brothers us.

Cleaned up w/new output shaft, new bearings, new syncro's, new seals and gaskets - Transmission done on to the transfer case. I considered the NP205 or Dana 300. I finally decide to just stick with the Dana 20 it's a solid T case and I'm not building a rock crawler. Any way here's some pics not in any real order. http://s1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh5 ... =slideshow

Couldn't get to see the pix because it says this is marked a private album.

The power wielding will happen later, this is just getting it to the wheels - infrastructure if you will.

I'm making a prairie chicken - not a mountain goat and the 20 is tougher than you think. . That bein' said, Should it grenade I'll go back to 205 or 300 concept. I believe it's the U - joints that are going to blow if I get it in a bind.

The output shaft is a known weak point-you may break that first, or destroy it over time. That said, they're not that hard to replace if you swap out the entire output housing and you can probably find a trail spare fairly cheap.

I've seen that. At $429 they're pretty proud of it. Not sure I wouldn't just put the money towards a 203/205 doubler setup.

I am by no means an expert in this area, that being said I considered several things when I was determining which transfer case to use, What I'm using it for "Prairie Chicken Daily Driver", The country I prefer is for the most part not that severe - rugged not severe however I don't require super low - the 435 compound, 428 torque at low rpm and low range will be more than sufficient, clearance can be an issue and the 20 tucks up nice and tight even with a pto (did I mention - 8000 ramsey) , No extreme drive line modifications, the additional length on the harder output shaft is minor, No extreme floorboard mods either. The 20 is a durable case some straight cut gears, weak output shaft and noise are it's issue all minor and at least one - correctable. I looked at a 205, 300 swap sure heavier more modern cases but not worth the trade off in initial cost, drive line modification (of which I am already making enough of anyway) or clearance wise. I have a couple of good Dana 24's I considered fitting in, strong hard cases I have brutalized this style of T case in 1 ton trucks - mod wise worse than the 205 / 300 to install. And you are absolutely correct Wild Horse is pretty proud of that part, that's why only the transmission w/ adapter is completed, I allocate funds over time and that time isn't here yet.
