Phoenix Pop Up Bronco Camper
I am seriously considering ordering a custom pop-up for my Bronco from Coyote R.V. Their family was the original designer of the “Bronco” pop-up campers from the 70’s that some of us dream of finding and buying. Of course finding one worth buying in decent condition is the hard part, I’ve kept an eye out for one since I purchased my Bronco and it is definitely a right time right place thing. Of those I’ve seen for sale there has only been one that I would have purchased, it was a Red on Red Bronco w/camper up in Alaska that sold around a year ago.
I’ve had the fortune of actually crawling into one locally, too far gone for the money being asked, but I was able to see the size and configuration to decide if it would work for what I wanted to do with it. Multi-day backcountry exploring, self contained comfort, minimal setup and teardown, small footprint (if the Bronco can fit and park I’m in), and finally it is always ready to go.
I realize that this would change my rig dramatically, but I have another Bronco that I’m building with/for my son that would become the primary crawling rig, leaving mine for more mild and extended adventures. Honestly more than 50% of the trails that I’ve ran so far I could get my Bronco w/camper up the trail. The reason for being on the trail would change from trail run to get in and stay a while. On the more aggressive end I think it would get up to Wheeler Lake (taking all/most bypasses on the tough sections) and easily cruise the pass roads throughout the Rockies. I wouldn’t put the 5.5 in lift on that I have set aside and I’ll need to figure something out for a spare tire mount since the camper will likely be a tailgate down style for size.
Cost is a big factor, on the website they start at 12+ for the standard models and I already know I want a few options; cat heater versus forced air, LED lighting, external hot water, low amp fridge/freezer versus 3 way, possibly solar. I’ll be going to their production facility in Commerce City when I get home to check out what their new campers look like and make a final decision.
Is there anyone else interested in going along? Or would anyone be interested in getting one if I do to see if there would be a discount for a multiple purchase?
