How to assess a used engine
I've been doing a little poking around looking for a used engine, but have no idea how to tell if it's any good. I'm hoping to find an Explorer 5.0 or a 351w that I can convert to EFI and Explorer serp. Any advice or things to look for?

Re: How to assess a used engine
I'd rec a 94' and up 351w roller motor, if you can, perform a compression test at the very least and if possible a leak down test, pull plugs and inspect for any running or oil burning issues, pull the oil pan at least pull one rod cap and one main, make sure it turns over freely a couple turns, pull the intake or atleast a valve cover and check for sludge or signs of coolant mixed oil, pull the plugs and look in the cylinders for coolant or oil residue or any indicators of such problems

Hear and see it run along with everything ^ said. I sent my Co worker to my Ford truck guy where he bought a running roller '95 351w for around 280. He heard it run saw the 80k miles on the truck and picked it up the next day.

Re: How to assess a used engine
I wonder if getting a group rate from a JY would be a possibility. I may need to do some calling around.

Give him a call. He gets them fairly often. Sells everything he has cheap. Only Ford stuff. Mostly 70s-early 90s f250s but he gets some fsb's too. 303-936-4021 his name is Ed.
