So I have been doing some research on which spray in liner to use for my rebuild. I do not plan to put any carpet or rubber matting down so the only interior lining will be whatever spray I lay down. With that said, I am interested in cutting down on the heat and noise. I have looked into Lizard Skin and I know that it has been mentioned in more than one occasion that you can just get the microspheres and mix them with paint. I am also looking for something durable and that lays down thick to also "hide" imperfections of the steel.

So here is my question. Is there anything that should/would not work with mixing microspheres with Raptor Liner? I am hoping it will give me the texture and durability of Raptor Liner with the sound deadening qualities of the microspheres. I definitely don't want to screw it up as it also sounds like it is a K9 dog to strip out a spray in liner.

Invest in a bed liner spray gun. The nozzle is big enough to let the rubber bits & microspheres through, but won't get clogged. I bought one when I painted my sister's CJ several years ago and then coated it with Herculiner, it made the job easier than rolling it, made it look better and hid some of the dings from my handy-man dolly/hammer work. It also makes the liner go further than if you roll it because you cut the liner with Xylene or Xylol and you can spray it to the thickness you want. I sprayed my interior with Herculiner 12 or 13 years ago and it turned out great, but I've had to patch in under my gas pedal. With the spray gun, you can't tell where I did it. So if you are going to do the DIY liner, do yourself a favor and buy the spray gun and get a uniform coat.

Definitely doing the gun. I will probably order 2 kits and also do my dads truck bed (probably first so I can cut my teeth on it). From pics I've seen of the Raptor Liner, I'm pretty excited to get it to that point!

If its anything like Herculiner, it is real easy to spray. The only problem I had was the compressor I was using didn't keep up very well with the spray gun. I ended up doing the Jeep in sections so I could make sure the uniform look was maintained. If you have a big compressor tank or a dual stage motor on your compressor, you shouldn't have a problem. The one I used was a single stage, 30 gal. compressor. Thats why it struggled, tank was really too small and the motor just couldn't keep up. If memory serves me, that gun was only like $25 at a paint supply store. They should have a decent bed liner gun that isn't real expensive, all it is is just a simple siphon sprayer with a big pickup and discharge tube.

I've seen airbur's Raptor liner, it looks good. If I ever strip the Herculiner out of my tub, that'll be a top contender. Post up anything you find about adding microbubbles to it, I've thought about the same thing. The latex usually used may not play well with the oil based liner, but an oil based paint under the liner may work as well. Might be worth a call to Raptor to see what would be compatible.

I have used liner xtreeme for two vehicles and it is awesome! I used a hooper/ texture gun from harbor freight and it was a lot better than the regular bed liner gun that comes with most kits. It is only $20. I like that method because you can adjust the flow/consistency that you want in texture for the finished product. I set my gun at a more aggressive texture because I wasn't going to use carpet. The kit is sold on eBay and I used a full kit to do the everything. You can also pick colors of bed liner from this company but I have never used anything other than black liner

Not to hijack the thread, but way back when I had thought about doing a dual exhaust and tucking it way up next to the tub. Was advised that the floor board would get very (uncomfortably) hot. Might I be able to spray the underside of the tub -- basically where the exhaust would run -- with something like the Raptorliner and add the microbeads and have an acceptable solution to the floor board heat issue?

I had Herculiner and swore I would never carpet it - loved the idea of being able to spray it out and never worry about the interior. However, got a sweet deal on the 1-piece Tom's kit from Landshark and was one of the smartest things I did, second only to Corbeau Seats. It made the interior quieter and more comfortable in every way. I would do it again - cheap Herculiner kit brush/roll-on, put the extra money from not buying a spray gun and expensive liner product, then put the money toward the Tom's 1-Piece Carpet. That may be the only Tom's product that I put in my Truck - I used Wild Horses on everything else, but WH carpet is 2 piece. Meaning there is a seam right where the rear passengers have their feet. The 1-Piece is better.

I won't convince anyone dead-set against carpet, but I was in the same position and had to add my experience.

Adding carpet to the interior of a sprayed bed I bet really dampens the sound. If I didn't have so many leaks or naturally occurring A/C vents, I would have done something like that.

75DBE, the problem with tucking your exhaust up too close, even if you have the micro-beads in the liner, is the liner isn't designed to take the heat that the exhaust will generate. You'd need to have a high temp paint if you get too close. But if you are talking 3-4" away, then you wouldn't have a problem. I lined the entire engine bay of mine and I don't have any problem spots, but there is also nothing within that gap that gets overtly hot. THat is where something like Lizard Skin would be better because they have designed it to go right up against the exhaust pipes. But it also doesn't do well with petrol-based products. Or at least it didn't used to.

Please Let me know how much liner you went through to cover the tub, engine bay, and inner fenders, or whatever you plan on spraying.

Sprayed today. Did my Dad's truck bed first and then did my ride. We did not use the microbeads on his truck and the beads definitely add a good bit more texture. His looks very clean and smooth with a touch of texture. Mine definitely has a different look to it. We used about 2 and half quarts on his truck and we used the other 5 1/2 on mine. We actually ran out so I finished the wheel wells and underside of the hood with paint that I mixed up with microbeads I had left. I would say if you are going to spray the engine bay, inner fenders, underhood, interior tub and wheel wells... it would be worth buying two complete sets. You would end up having a quart or so left over for touch ups down the road.

Good info, and it looks good as well, I'm interested in the feedback on noise and heat when you get it on the road.

I'm not sure if I will have a legitimate frame of reference if it cut down on noise or not since I never really drove it before I started tearing it apart. You are more than welcome to ride in it to check it out once I get it put back together. I just bought an additional kit for touch ups and to do the underside of the hard top.

Is the sprayer that comes with the kit reusable? Did you spray over bare metal? Thanks
