new Emissions Laws!!!!
As of August of 2013 our wonderful communist government has put into effect a new law. ALL collector plated vehicles will be required to go through the 2 speed idle test now every 5 years when your collectors plates are due. So no more emissions exempt with a collector plated vehicle. Time to move from this crap hole Kolorado/californiaII End

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
I still haven't found that on the official CO Dept of Revenue website but it was on a secondary site. http://www.dmv.org/co-colorado/smog-che ... uirements- part way down the page it says: NOTE: While collector vehicles were previously exempt from emissions testing in the areas required, a law was passed into affect in August 2013 that now requires emissions inspections for vehicles registered as collector items. Please review the Collector Plate Regulations Change for more information.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
My read on this is that the change only affects 1976 and newer vehicles.
"THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHALL ESTABLISH a biennial inspection schedule shall be established for 1982 and newer model vehicles, and an annual INSPECTION schedule shall be established for 1981 and older model vehicles, AND A FIVE-YEAR INSPECTION SCHEDULE FOR A 1976 OR NEWER MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTERED AS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM."
So, if you've got a 76-77 EB, then you'd have to have it tested every 5 years if it's registered as a collectors vehicle, otherwise it's yearly. That said, I'm a lousy attorney, so my read could be wrong.

Saw this one coming a mile back and was somewhat expecting it.
I hope I pass.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
Looks like I'll keep my TX residency then... Unless we get to AK for the next duty station.
In reality, I remember having to have my '74 tested once in Denver and I was so worried it wouldn't pass as it smoked and ran poorly. But I didn't have any issues.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
Check out this link: http://aircarecolorado.com/consumer-inf ... or-plates/I called the number listed at the bottom and spoke with one of the agents. 76 and newer registered as collector will now need an emissions test every 5 years (& on next renewal if you already had collectors plates on it). 75 and older is unchanged (won't need emissions) if you have collector plates. You will need to pass emissions once to get the collectors plates if you don't already have them. Hope this helps. Jeff

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
So since I have a 73 and going with EFI, are they going to require me to have smog pumps etc since it is not the original 302??

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
I'd get it past smog, then put collector plates on it. Then you'll be able to do whatever you want. Not sure that smog will be that big a deal for a '73.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
I don't have emissions testing here, now (yet?). After reading this thread, I'm thinking I should go ahead and get Collector's tags the next time mine expire. That way I wouldn't have to get tested if they start testing here in Gunnison.
Not sure what a 74 needs to pass, but I know I'm not running and EGR on my EFI, and my truck had an EGR on the original 2bbl manifold.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
When I had mine tested many years ago, they hooked up the exhaust sensor, popped the hood, ran the test, shut the hood and handed me my passing paperwork. No one said a thing about it being EFI or anything. It's kinda a gray area. If I were to pass the emissions for the year of the engine, I'd be in a world of hurt.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
Landshark - As Justin said you could get it but it will need emission testing every 5 years when it comes to renewal. At least that's the way I read it as well.
To kbank6 - like Jesus_man said they won't care what you have as long as it passes the sniffer test. They just have to pop the hood to hook up to a plug wire for the tach. I know from previous experience that if your rig has too high of an idle speed they will fail it. Mine loads the torque converter pretty hard in drive so in order to get it to idle in drive the in park idle is about 1000 or a little more. Over 1000 I think it fails so it needs to idle under 1k. At least that's what I remember back 15 or so yrs ago.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
You might be able to get Collector plates for it and avoid smog for several more years. The criteria are:
"(c) A MODEL YEAR AT LEAST THIRTY-TWO YEARS OLD; EXCEPT THAT, IF THE VEHICLE IS BEING REGISTERED IN THE PROGRAM AREA, AS DEFINED IN SECTION 42-4-304: (I) THE VEHICLE MUST HAVE PASSED AN EMISSIONS TEST MEETING THE STANDARDS OF PART 3 OF ARTICLE 4 OF THIS TITLE WITHIN THE LAST TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE BEING INITIALLY REGISTERED BY THE OWNER AS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM; AND (II) THE OWNER MUST SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT THAT THE VEHICLE WILL NOT BE DRIVEN ON ROADWAYS FOR MORE THAN FOUR THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED MILES PER YEAR."
Not sure if you meet (or care about) the mileage criteria, but other than that you should be covered if you've still got your smog paperwork from last year.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
I worked at air care Colorado the first three years it was in existence. It realky is a joke buy they have relaxed alot. When I was there if the engine was not original or if you put efi on a carb truck or car we automatic failed it. Then you would havget a notorized letter from a mechanic saying it was "ok" then fill out all kinds of forms to approve the new motor. . Pain in the ass There are still tail pipe only emission places around town go to them. There was one off Broadway for years. He was awesome Find the dumbest looking ing retard you can dont say anything about the motor or cats because I think they can make you jump through those hoops still

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
ok just went and got my emission testing done and renewed my registration on the 76 bronco.
I now have 5 year collectors plates as vehicles 1981 and older now qualify - cost me $199 which is well worth it.
In order to qualify for the 5 year plates you will need a emissions test done in the last year...
BTW had to go to a new independent emission inspection place as Jerrys on Wadsworth is no longer in business.. The new place I went to on Federal didn't ask me one question except for what year the Bronco was.

Re: new Emissions Laws!!!!
Crap! I just renewed my plates today. If I would have known that my 81 could have gotten collector plates I would've got them.
While I don't believe it should ever have to visit the smog nazis, every 5 years sure beats every year.
Oh, just to brag a little....Not too bad considering it's got a Trickflow cam in it:
