I know a guy, or two, that could likely give you a solid day of parts grabbing, then another day of swap time. It would have to be scheduled of course, but it's doable. Start looking at the PnP inventories; Denver, Aurora, Co Spgs & Littleton.
Edit: Money wise it should be under 500 to make it happen; 100+ for trans, ~ 100 for pedal & hydraulic clutch bits, ~100 to rework driveshaft or grab a donor or may even get away with no mods, another 100+ for incidentals.

Saw an E4OD today in a similar truck, was 460 equipped prior to someone yanking the motor.

Re: 96 F250 parts or whole
Kirk- what if we take a swing at rebuilding the E4OD, How bad could it be? Depending on what needs to be replaced, parts kit look to be about $200-$350. A manual $27 and maybe a tool or two $150.....$500 could be all it takes!!

The vss should be on the rear diff I believe so shouldn't matter what trans. I might be wrong a trip over to ford truck enthusiast should shed some light as its a common swap. Your f250 should have the bolt holes for the zf crossmember, tunnel and clutch setup.
I know the e40d is a complicated transmission but guys have rebuilt them.
I can help as well. I think I still have a luk clutch, pressure plate and flywheel for a 460/zf combo :)

Re: 96 F250 parts or whole
Mine is a 460/zf combo but is 8 years older. Not sure if they changed much in that time but I'm happy to let it be the vehicle to see, take measurements from, etc.
I built autos for a while at a transmission shop but never touched the e4od. They pretty much had one guy there for them cause they sucked and he hated them too. He said they were hassle.
