I need a new phone
So, I'm due for a new phone. My iPhone 4S is starting to act very funky and I suspect it will be giving up the ghost sooner rather than later.
I like iPhones because I am comfortable with them and I have a bunch of apps I have paid for. Additionally, I enjoy having the ability to FaceTime with the Frau when I am traveling.
However I am liking what I am seeing in the Samsung Galaxy's. I've used a Galaxy 2 or 3 before and frankly did not like it. Probably just an OS thing.
So, give me your valuable input and help me decide what I should get next. I have a poll up. If you choose the "something else" option, please let me know what I should be looking at.
Thanks.

Re: I need a new phone
I like the timing of this poll, I am also in need of a new phone. I used the droids until about a year ago when it failed miserably and I inherited one of my sons old I-phones. They have all upgraded to the I-phone 5s' but me... I always have to wait until there is no hope before I upgrade. The numerous cracks in the glass are leading me to believe it is time.
Guys in the office all like the Samsung - except us "old guys" who like the I-phones. My boss just upgraded and loves the latest and greatest I-phone. I am leaning that way.

Re: I need a new phone
The iPhone and the Samsung are comparable phones. It really comes down to a matter of OS preference.
I've had iPhones since they first came out because I was sick of the old windows phones and all the headaches that came with them. I've tried out several Android OS models over the years and have never found the OS to be as polished. Most of the guys that I know that have them love them because they're easy to crack and load a custom OS on. Downloading a new/hacked flavor of OS every couple weeks is what I hated most about the original windows phones. My iPhones have always just worked with no need to mess with them.

Re: I need a new phone
My wife has been on Iphone since the 3G, and has loved it, or simply won't admit she hates it because I give her a lot of grief over it. Gotta stand for something...
No phone is perfect, but being a Windoze guy, it seemed natural to go to android. I'm loving my S5 with Ballastic case. My battery lasts all day under normal use and is several months older than my wife's 5s, which only lasts 6hrs on full charge. The 4S was no better and I replaced the battery in it twice hoping to help. Junk batteries, but even the factory one didn't hold for a full year.
I am sure Skype has an app for both andriod and IOS, so you can still video chat.
The worst part is losing all your paid apps. But you should try the Samsung for the grace period. Might even look into the Note's if you do more tablet type stuff.

Re: I need a new phone
for those that simply need to have an iPhone or iPad repaired..........
I highly recommend ShatterBuggy.
These guys show up to your office or home in some little tiny car (mini or Prius) and repair it on the spot for a great price.
Me, I like Apple products but then I'm a huge creature of habit.

Re: I need a new phone
Crazy timing - just upgraded from a 4S to a 6 this morning. I love both phones and the iPhone 6 there is even more to love. Best part about staying iPhone is upgrading took 15 minutes on the computer and the new phone is completely setup exactly how I like it - It even remembers the searches in Maps, bookmarks, ring tones, alarm, etc. I see no reason to change teams when Apple makes it SOOOO easy. Add in the fact that my 4S has served perfectly for many years, it seems to change.

Re: I need a new phone
I've got a Galaxy S4 and am really happy with it. I'm not a fan of anything Apple makes, mostly because I like to tinker. I build my own computers, have hacked several phones and a tablet, and prefer the flexibility that the Android platform gives. For non-technophiles that won't notice that Apple has limitations, they're awesome (and well made). They're also really expensive.

Re: I need a new phone
I voted Iphone. I like most things Apple makes for one reason....It's easy and I'm willing to pay for easy. Also, FaceTime is really cool and (again) easy. I'm currently buying a house and was trying to explain the layout to my dad in California. Why explain it when I can show him with FaceTime ? My only i phone complaint is that calls sometimes switch over to FaceTime when I accidentally bump the screen. Also, I'm convinced Michelle's I phone is possessed because Siri will speak to you without any provocation. It often speaks to us in the middle of the night and makes comments during movies which is a bit odd. Samsung also makes great products but most people I know that switched from Apple to Samsung did it to be "Different" or " Original " Which is a bit like buying a Chevy instead of a Ford to be " Different ". If you have Verizon, I know many people who have had trouble with their text messages after going from apple to android. There can be problems that are apparently related to Apple's iMessage format not wanting to be used with the Android phones. My brother recently went through this problem and had to get a new phone number to fix the problem. Maybe they figured out how to correct this issue but 6 months ago, it was a serious problem.

Re: I need a new phone
My 2 cents, I have a Kyocera Brigadier. It is a MIL spec phone. I have had it since August after upgrading from a flip ph. It has the saphire glass and even though none of them are not un-breakable I have dropped mine several times I still haven't broken it. It is a droid OS and is capable of running all the common apps. It has front and back cameras. Good luck with your decision. JP

Re: I need a new phone
No offense taken! I've got an iPhone for work. It's fine, I just like Android better. It's as much a dislike of Apple's walled garden approach as anything. Totally agree that it's Ford vs. Chevy. You can't really go wrong between the iPhone and the Galaxy S4/5-both are great phones.

Re: I need a new phone
Anything but Motorolla...I know it's a big brand and been around forever, but I haven't been happy with most of their products since the 80's.
The Droid phone I bought a few years back was the last straw.
I'm at a point in my life I just want it to work...iPhone.

Re: I need a new phone
I've decided to go with the iPhone.
When it comes down to it, I need the phone to really do two things well: make calls and handle texts. Getting another iPhone means I don't need to buy new chargers for the car. I can move everything on to my new phone in a matter of minutes. And I will be dealing with a familiar OS.
Now, all of that being said, I really do like the Galaxy's and the Note Edges. If I were still in to messing about with software tinkering, I would definitely be looking at getting one of them. In fact, I'll probably keep my eyes open for a used one as Christmas gets closer and people start dumping fancy toys.
But for now, I need reliable and safe.

Re: I need a new phone
The other thing I'd consider is which carrier. I have the iPhone on both Verizon and ATT. Verizon doesn't allow you to receive emails or any data for that matter while on a call. I find it very annoying. I would go with ATT if I had to choose one over the other.

Re: I need a new phone
I have an iPhone and it works well enough, but I get so stinking tired of how limited it is and how tight Apple has their fingers in my wallet. Amazon can't even let you buy anything through their iPhone app because if they did, apple wants a percentage of the purchase. In fact, any app that does any form of commerce is supposed to give apple a percentage.
I hate that I can't add a micro SD card.
I hate that I can't easily download and manipulate photos from my camera.
I hate that I can't load content from a USB thumb drive (music, video, text files, books, etc etc.) Apple only wants you loading content via itunes where they can sanitize it and if at all possible, get some money for it.
I hate that I can't load an app to customize the welcome screen the way I want.
I hate that I can't attach to a generic bluetooth serial device to do things like control my telescope, read and record data from analog sensors, etc. I use my android tablet for those sorts of things. Again, apple wants a hefty fee from the bluetooth people before they're allowed to connect to the iphone. Apple originally wanted to allow only a very limited number of bluetooth headsets, but they were screamed into submission very quickly.
I hate that my iPhone syncs to one and only one computer. There are ways to do multiple PCs but it's easy to screw your phone up. I sync to my home PC, but when I travel, I don't take it with me, so I can't add music (unless I buy it from apple), I can't add one of my hundred or so audio books, I can't add a video.
There are allot more annoying things that apple has done but I've whined enough.
As I said, I have an iPhone, but I'm not sure I'll get another when its time to upgrade.

Re: I need a new phone
I have a Iphone 5s, got it the day it came out since my 4 was so awesome. I went through 8 of them through Apples warranty in the first 8 months. I could have had it replaced more, but I got tired of going to the apple store once a month. I hate this phone and can wait to replace it when my contract with Sprint expires. Compared to my friends S4, on Sprint as well, it is slow piece of sh*t with terrible reception. I would go for the Samsung S5. Galaxy is sweet too. Will be the last Apple product I buy, and I have had a lot of Apple stuff. They are really going downhill.

Re: I need a new phone
I had an iphone 3g when they came out. Phone was nothing but problems. Ditched it for android. Have had an s3 now for 3 years and it's been a great phone. I just got an iphone 5s for work. Yep still the exact same pos the 3g was. Im just not an apple fan.

Oh and in my s3 I have a 32gb micro SD card that has 28gb of music on it. Let's see any apple phone do that.....

Bacon.... Just got a iPhone 6... I like it, seems to fit my sausage fingers and meat hooks decently. I don't care for how thin and slippery it though (which I assume will be resolved when I buy a decent protector case). So far seems to work well. I only really care about accessing Taptalk, CCB, Craigslist, Dezert Rangers and clash of clans. Lol

Re: I need a new phone
I have had a iPhone 4s for four years, I had it replaced a day after I got it and haven't had any problems since.
I don't hack or goof around with it as I have enough going on just want to make calls, take pictures and listen to music which it does well.
My wife has a year old android - think its a droid-x or something, its been great as well.
I considered an Android but I will be replacing my iphone here soon with either a Iphone 6 or 6 plus.. haven't decided yet.

Re: I need a new phone
I have no issues with the continued pummeling of expired equestrians. In fact, I still haven't picked up my phone so the continued discourse is encouraged.
Both BestBuy and the AT&T store closest to my house were out of the model and capacity I wanted. They did try and get me to take a 16GB phone which I declined. New iOS updates are at least 12GB now forcing me to wipe the phone before I can even update.

I upgrade to a new iPhone every six months or so............but at far less expense than Apple would like
I just print off a new stick and put on the face
I'm already using the 9Si
